Download or read book Yearning to Touch the Sky written by Groverle of America and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Yearning to Touch the Sky” is an amusing fable about one single individual’s search for a place to inhale and exhale freely. It is a tale about a painstaking journey to a new state of mind. The fictional story touches as a corollary on issues of race, class, sex and heterosexism. The author, Grover of America, calls for the birth of a new existence….a spiritual rebirth. He says; “we are part of the past and a part of the future, but because of our short memory, we have become prisoners of the present, prisoners of the market, afraid of listening to the wisdom of our ancestors.” This is a cry in the dark…against anachronistic colonialists, fanatical neo-liberals, racists, right neo-radicals and religious fundamentalists of whatever color. It is an appeal against the perversion of violence and a plea for respecting human uniqueness and the heterogeneity inherent in human societies.

Book excerpt: Standing in the Great Room at my home, I see a rainbow, appearing between the mirrors on my living room wall. I note that the six colors of the chakra system are in the correct sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and lilac at the top of the rainbow. Looking at my watch, the time is 5:50 p.m. The rainbow disappears, and now, none can be seen. The time is 5:55 p.m. Next, almost immediately, two rainbows appear. The first one is on the back of the Great Room Wall to the right above the sofa while I stand there facing the mirrors. The second rainbow appears on the lamp. Both of them contain the six colors of the chakra system in the chronological order. I am left wondering if these visuals are the light of God giving me the go ahead for putting my writings into the hands of the people. Since the chakra system and the rainbow are both utilized in my writings, I believe this sign is from God and no accident.

Download or read book Self Consciousness written by John Updike and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Updike’s memoirs consist of six Emersonian essays that together trace the inner shape of the life, up to the age of fifty-five, of a relatively fortunate American male. The author has attempted, his foreword states, “to treat this life, this massive datum which happens to be mine, as a specimen life, representative in its odd uniqueness of all the oddly unique lives in this world.” In the service of this metaphysical effort, he has been hair-raisingly honest, matchlessly precise, and self-effacingly humorous. He takes the reader beyond self-consciousness, and beyond self-importance, into sheer wonder at the miracle of existence.

Download or read book Kirinyaga written by Mike Resnick and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 1999-05-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed for his grandeur of imagination and superb worldbuilding, winner of and nominee for more than fifty awards for his outstanding work, Mike Resnick has rightfully won a place as one of science fiction's master storytellers. Now, in Kirinyaga, Resnick presents the haunting and utterly compelling tale of one man's utopia. By the twentieth second century in the African nation of Kenya, polluted cities sprawl up the flanks of sacred Mount Kirinyaga. Great animal herds are but distant memories. European crops now grow on the sweeping savannas. But Koriba, a distinguished, educated man of Kikuyu ancestry, knows that life was different for his people centuries ago--and he is determined to build a utopian colony, not on earth, but on the terraformed planetoid he proudly names Kirinyaga. As the mundumugu--witch doctor--Koriba leads the colonists. Reinstating the ancient customs and stringent laws of the Kikuyu people, he alone decides their fate. He must face many challenges to the struggling colony's survival: from a brilliant young girl whose radiant intellect could threaten their traditional ways to the interference of "Maintenance" which holds the power to revoke the colony's charter. All the while, only Koriba--unbeknownst to his people--maintains the computer link to the rest of humanity. Ironically, the Kirinyaga experiment threatens to collapse--not from violence or greed--but from humankind's insatiable desire for knowledge. The Kikuyu people can no more stand still in time than their planet can stop revolving around its sun. Deeply moving, swiftly paced, and profound in its implications, Kirinyaga is Mike Resnick's most triumphant work to date. His Fable of Utopia is the book every science fiction reader will want to own and savor for years to come.
