Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railways of South and Central America: A Manual Containing Statistics and Other Information Concerning the Important Railways of South and Central America, Mexico and the West Indies This volume is compiled with the idea of giving a brief description of a number of the railways operating in South and Central America, Mexico and the West Indies, and is divided into three parts: I. South America. II. Mexico, Central America and Panama. III. The West Indies. The method used in compiling this book will commend itself readily to the reader. Each of the three parts is divided into chapters, each of which covers a country, or a group of countries islands, etc.; and contains: (1) a description of the railway development in and other information regarding the country or countries: (2) tables (where possible) and notes giving details as to capitalization, mileage, earnings, financial condition, amount of freight and number of passengers handled, history, location and nature of country traversed by each of the various railway lines under discussion. The Tables in a majority of cases are rendered expressed in Pounds Sterling and American Gold; for convenience sake the basis of $5.00 per is used. At the end of the book will be found Appendices containing additional information of interest. The opening of the Panama Canal in the immediate future and the rapid development of Latin America, particularly Argentine, Brazil, Chili and Uruguay, is attracting a great amount of interest throughout the United States, and the writer, who for a number of years has, in the capacity of Statistician for Messrs. Jas. H. Oliphant & Co., New York and Chicago, assisted Mr. Floyd W. Mundy in the compilation of the "Earning Power of Railroads," has felt the necessity of a volume covering briefly the railways operated in American Countries other than the United States and Canada. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Expansion in Latin America: Descriptive and Narrative History of the Railroad Systems of Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia and All Other Countries of South and Central America Europe, though it expended billions financing our needs, had still more funds in its purse. Some of these funds were diverted to Africa, Southern Europe, India and the Far East; likewise large amounts were ih vested ih Latin America. Here was a great field, and two of the nations - Great Britain and France - were not slow to grasp the opportunities which awaited them. British capitalists took over most of the tiny straggling, half-built railways scattered here and there throughout South America, financed and extended them and made them into large profitable systems. By means of British capital, tramway lines, power plants and comprehensive water systems were constructed in the various cities; companies were formed to develop agricultural areas, and mines and industries were exploited. Book Development of Railroads in Guatemala and El Salvador 1849 1929

Download or read book Development of Railroads in Guatemala and El Salvador 1849 1929 written by Delmer G. Ross and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the planning, construction, and early operation of the railroad network of these two Central American nations. The network was unique in Central America because the majority of it was eventually taken over, completed, and operated by International Railways of Central America, a subsidiary of an American concern, the United Fruit company. This book explains in considerable detail how all of this occurred, from the first few miles of track to the completion of the final international network link. Based on a mix of primary and secondary sources, published and unpublished, the narrative notes how progressive thinkers saw railroads as a way to improve the economies of the nations involved.
