Book The World s First Railway System

Download or read book The World s First Railway System written by Mark Casson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British railway network was a monument to Victorian private enterprise. Its masterpieces of civil engineering were emulated around the world. But its performance was controversial: praised for promoting a high density of lines, it was also criticised for wasteful duplication of routes. This is the first history of the British railway system written from a modern economic perspective. It uses conterfactual analysis to construct an alternaive network to represent the most efficient alternative rail network that could have been constructed given what was known at the time - the first time this has been done. It reveals how weaknesses in regulation and defects in government policy resulted in enormous inefficiency in the Victorian system that Britain lives with today. British railway companies developed into powerful regional monopolies, which then contested each other's territories. When denied access to existing lines in rival territories, they built duplicate lines instead. Plans for an integrated national system, sponsored by William Gladstone, were blocked by Members of Parliament because of a perceived conflict with the local interests they represented. Each town wanted more railways than its neighbours, and so too many lines were built. The costs of these surplus lines led ultimately to higher fares and freight charges, which impaired the performance of the economy. The book will be the definitive source of reference for those interested in the economic history of the British railway system. It makes use of a major new historical source, deposited railway plans, integrates transport and local history through its regional analysis of the railway system, and provides a comprehensive, classified bibliography.

Book Northamptonshire s Lost Railways

Download or read book Northamptonshire s Lost Railways written by David Blagrove and published by Stenlake Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northamptonshire which at one-time included, the Soke of Peterborough, is one of Britain's most inland counties and one of the most rural in southern England. Nevertheless, at the peak of the Railway Age in the latter part of the nineteenth century its railway system was one of most complex anywhere in the country. Lying across the axis of most of the major routes from London to the Midlands and the North, it encompassed many of the branch lines which struck off from these major routes. The complex history is clarified in this well written book illustrated by fifty-one superb period views dating from the late 1800s until the Beeching era of the 1960s. Locations included are: Blakesley, Wellingborough, Wappenham, Salcey Forest, Oundle, Brackley, Roade, Blisworth, Weedon, Braunston, Northampton, Irthlingborough, Ringstead and Addington, Thrapston, Orton Waterville, Peterborough, Banbury, Althorp Park, Lamport, Luffenham, Helpston, Uffington and Barnack, Cranford, Raunds, Gretton, Rushden, Desborough and Rothwell, Eye Green, Kings Sutton, Aynho, Cherwelton, Woodford and Hinton (later Woodford Halse), Chalcombe, Towcester, Byfield, and the tiny station of Long Buckby, final stopping place for the Royal Train on the occasion of Princess Diana's funeral.

Book A History of the County of Northampton

Download or read book A History of the County of Northampton written by Mark Page and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and authoritative history of Corby and Great Oakley, charting their growth and development from the early medieval period to the present day. Lying in north Northamptonshire, close to the borders with Leicestershire and Rutland, the neighbouring parishes of Corby and Great Oakley were formerly part of the ancient administrative division of Corby hundred. Both remainedagricultural villages, typical of much of rural Northamptonshire before 1932 when the landscape of the area was dramatically altered by large-scale industrialisation associated with the production of iron and steel following the discovery of rich ironstone deposits to the north and east of Corby village. Corby was most directly affected by these changes, with the parish experiencing a dramatic rise in population after the Stewarts & Lloyds Company chose toconcentrate their entire steel producing operation there. Between 1932 and 1950, the increasing population resulted in the hasty construction, firstly by the Stewarts & Lloyds Company and later by the Corby UDC, of housing estates on former agricultural land adjacent to the steelworks, before Corby was designated a New Town in April 1950 and responsibility for it passed to the Corby Development Corporation. From this point on, Great Oakley was inexorablydrawn into the expanding new town as it spread southwards, eventually being incorporated firstly into Corby urban district in1967 and in 1993 into Corby Borough. Although Corby is perhaps best known for the social problems or"New Town Blues" that blighted it after the steelworks (the town's principal employer) closed in 1980, this volume documents the lesser known medieval and early modern history of Corby and Great Oakley; it shows how generations of inhabitants utilised the rich natural geology and the abundant woodland to supplement the local agrarian economy, before examining in detail Corby's industrialisation, physical and economic growth, post-industrial decline and 21st-century regeneration. Mark Page is Assistant Editor, Victoria County History, Oxfordshire; Matthew Bristow is Research Manager, Victoria County History.
