Book The Railways of the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Railways of the World Classic Reprint written by Ernest Protheroe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railways of the World The history of railways is one long record of courage, determination, and energy untiringly expended in vanquishing difficulties. The locomotive engine in appearance and purpose is more obvious than, for example, a steamship's propelling machinery. It is at once the visible embodiment of strength and speed; it strikingly represents a great force that has rendered enormous service in the civilisation of the world, vitalising human affairs, and bringing untold benefits and joys to mankind. Even those who have no knowledge of the technicalities of locomotive design are interested in the railway engine; it seizes upon the fanciful mind of a child, and its appeal grows rather than lessens with the passing years, because the adult mind better grasps the far-reaching utility of a contrivance that has contributed more to happiness than any other invention. Nor has the advent of electric traction robbed the steam locomotive of any of its fascination. An electric train, with its comparative silence and smoothness, somehow appeals less to the imagination than one headed by a throbbing, panting monster, which seems alive in hauling its load against time. It is sometimes urged against a book of this character, that necessarily it must get speedily out of date, but the same objection holds good in practically every department of human activity. Railway progress never ceases; the old ever gives place to the new. Even while this work has been in preparation important projects have been completed and others commenced. There have been notable changes in the personnel of various large railway systems: honours have come to some officials, while others have been signalled to their rest - but the railways, being an integral part of the national life, go on without a pause. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cosmopolitan Railway, Compacting and Fusing Together All the World's Continents It was first so thought of our continent, from the magnitude Of its area, from its sublime economy of structure. And from its being in form a compact island set out in the circumambient oceans. It is this peculiarity Of structure, together with a partial isolation, and the exemption from the eu tanglements and barriers which characterize the older continents, that have made possible and easy the rapid strides in the general development of humanity to a higher and more enduring condition of refinement, and the evolution of institutions propitious to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Work, Vol. 6: June, 1903 This is a new application of taxation. Not only will it bring an enormous addition to the revenue of New York City, but, more important still, it also (as the anti - trust law does) declares that corporations are within the power of the law. Like the great merger case, it has a moral value. This also will be appealed, but it is not thought that the decision will be reversed by the United States Supreme Court. It is doubtful whether the Supreme Court will find that it falls within its jurisdiction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railway and Marine World, 1908: Devoted to Steam and Electric Railway, Marine, Grain Elevator, Express, Telegraph and Contractors' Interests The Empire Club of Toronto entertained at luncheon, recently, D. B. Hanna, Third Vice President Canadian Northern Ry., and President Canadian Northern Quebec Ry. And Quebec and Lake St. John Ry., who spoke as follows: The commercial history of Western Canada begins in 1670, with the charter by which Charles the Second constituted Prince Rupert and seventeen of his friends The Governor and Company of Ad venturers Trading into Hudson's Bay, and permitted them to trade over an area of square miles. For these tremendous privileges their only obligation to the monarch 'was to supply him annually with two elk and two black beaver from the country over which they assumed s'overeign rights. The toll of elk and beaver has long since been superseded by a less picturesque method of making annual reports. The difference be tween the elk and beaver of the Gover nor and Company of Adventurers and the voluminous reports of the Cana dian Pacific Railway, the Canadian Northern Railway, and other large concerns is the difference between Western Canada 'without transporta tion and Western Canada with trans portation. Book Classic Lionel Trains 1900 1969

Download or read book Classic Lionel Trains 1900 1969 written by Gerry Souter and published by Motorbooks International. This book was released on 2002 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1900 through the late-1950s, Lionel went from a wooden cheese box on wheels to expensive toy trains that flew off shelves at the height of the Great Depression to one of the world's most recognizable brand names. In the 1960s, the company found itself in a fight for its life; only a buyout from General Mills would save the name from relegation to the dust heap of time. More than 80 modern color photographs help break Lionel's "classic" rags-to-riches-to-rags period into five distinct eras, and a fascinating history examines the design and marketing of the company's most significant -- and dubious -- products, placing them in the context of contemporary competition, real-life railroads, and world affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's Freight Railway Co It is founded upon the further theory that any new railroad between the West and the East, under private corporate control, will furnish no material element in solving the problem of cheap transportation, unless it be provided with some certain protection against the' con trol and influence of such great railroad corporations as the Pennsylvania and the New York Central. And upon the further theory, that a new railroad be tween the East and the West can be made to carry freight as cheaply, if not more cheaply, than can be done by water transportation, if it be honestly constructed, for the ready cash, in the most judiciously economical manner, of the three feet gauge, with double tracks and low grades; provided the railroad company owns the road-bed and tracks, and individuals and firms who wish to become common carriers own and operate the trains, paying the railroad company prescribed tolls, the trains being moved at a uniform speed of, say ten miles per hour, and there being full business for the capacity of the road thus managed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railway and Marine World: Devoted to Steam and Electric Railway, Marine, Grain Elevator, Express, Telegraph and Contractors' Interests; General Index for 1910 The diagonal brace, which is usually put in all underframes at the corners, is a detail which varies according to the ideas of the designer or master car build er. Some advocate extending it from the ends of the centre sills to the intersection of the side sill and bolster, arguing that it relieves the centre sills of a portion of the buffing shocks, transmitting same to the sides; also that any cornering Of the car sufficient to damage it to any ex tent would also be great enough to dam age the brace if it was extending from the corner of the car to the inter section Of the centre sill and bolster, and Without the brace at the corner the underframe is much easier re paired. I-t would seem good practice how yer, to extend the brace from the intersection of the centre sill and bolster to the corn-er Of the car, bracing the cor ner against ordinary cornering shocks, and to always take care of the buh'ing shock in the centre sills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railway Review, Vol. 36: May 30, 1896 Tee political economy club of the University of Chicago were favored on Thursday evening of the current week with an address by the Hon. Martin A. Knapp, of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Mr. Knapp outlined in an entertaining as well as convincing way how the development of railroad transportation had revolutionized the industrial economics of the country, and that while competi tion, so long as it was modified and circumscribed by the cost of transportation over long distances, could not injure and might in some degree stimulate trade, the possibilities of present methods, by which dis tance was annihilated, had altogether changed the situation, and made competition very often a menace to, if not the death oi, trade. Inasmuch as it is hoped to publish this address in full in the near future no extended review will now be made.
