Book The Railroad Builders Volume 38 Chronicles of America

Download or read book The Railroad Builders Volume 38 Chronicles of America written by John Moody and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States as we know it today is largely the result of mechanical inventions, and in particular of agricultural machinery and the railroad. One transformed millions of acres of uncultivated land into fertile farms, while the other furnished the transportation which carried the crops to distant markets. Before these inventions appeared, it is true, Americans had crossed the Alleghanies, reached the Mississippi Valley, and had even penetrated to the Pacific coast; thus in a thousand years or so the United States might conceivably have become a far-reaching, straggling, loosely jointed Roman Empire, depending entirely upon its oceans, internal watercourses, and imperial highways for such economic and political integrity as it might achieve.

Book Nameless Builders of the Transcontinental Railway

Download or read book Nameless Builders of the Transcontinental Railway written by William F. Chew and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical study of the Chinese railroad workers using data from the Central Pacific Railroad Company payroll records dating from 1864 to 1867, correcting the first date of Chinese by the Central Pacific, and the total number of workers employed, with an explanation of how this estimate was calculated. Nearly one thousand workers are named, listing their wages and occupations, dispelling the notion that all Chinese workers were "coolies". A synopsis is extrapolated from previously published works along with arguments for and against the data of some historical events, such as Bloomer Cut and Cape Horn. In addition, the building of the Summit Tunnels, and the laying of ten miles of track in one day are detailed. Particular focus is applied to the little known 1,330 Chinese fatalities which occurred while building the western route of the transcontinental, comparing these numbers to the total lives claimed by other major historical construction projects.

Book The Railroad Fuels Westward Expansion 1870s

Download or read book The Railroad Fuels Westward Expansion 1870s written by Russell Roberts and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was once a time when the idea of a transcontinental railroad was considered foolish—a waste of time and resources. After all, what use was a railroad through the desolate regions of western America? However, as the United States began to expand and more and more settlers made their way west by horseback or covered wagon, the concept of a railroad spanning the country made more and more sense. Finally, in the midst of an epic civil war, President Abraham Lincoln signed the law that called for the building of a transcontinental railroad. There were many obstacles for the railroad builders to overcome. Harsh weather, mountains, hostile attacks, and even a lack of manpower were just some of the problems that had to be overcome. However, eventually the railroad builders triumphed, and finally train whistles could be heard echoing over the once quiet landscape of the western United States.
