Book excerpt: Between 1973 and 1989, various Western powers and Libya were entangled in a seemingly never-ending exchange of blows. Supposedly launched in retaliation for one action or the other, this confrontation resulted in a number of high-profile, even though low-scale, clashes between the Libyan Arab Air Force (LAAF), the US Navy and even the French. Meanwhile, almost as a sideshow, the LAAF - quantitatively one of the most potent air forces in North Africa and the Middle East - also saw intensive deployment in Chad. Initially, with sporadic fighting between different parties for the control of N'Djamena, the Chadian capital, this conflict eventually turned into a major war when Libya invaded the country outright. The LAAF deployed not only French-made Mirage but also Soviet-made fighter-bombers of MiG and Sukhoi design, Mil-designed helicopters and even bombers of Tupolev design, to establish her dominance over the extensive battlefield of the Sahara Desert. Because of the Cold War but also due to confrontation with Libya over a number of other issues, France - a one-time major arms supplier to Libya - and the USA gradually got dragged into the war. Deployments of their troops and intelligence services in Chad, Egypt and the Sudan never resulted in a full-scale war against Libya, but time and again culminated in small-scale aerial operations that proved crucial to developments on the ground, several of which are still a matter of extensive debate. Detailing not only the aerial operations but the ground war and the geopolitical background of these conflicts, and illustrated with over 100 contemporary photographs, maps and all-new color profiles, this volume provides a unique insight into an otherwise completely forgotten conflict that raged from the skies over the southern Mediterranean to southern Chad and northern Sudan, yet one that not only represented a formative period of the LAAF, but which also prompted a number of crucial modifications and developments in France and the USA.

Sectarianism from one or both parties in conflict can cause radicalization and help to sow the seeds of terrorist groups. ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and Levant), ISIS, IS or Daesh is the best example of a modern-era Jihadist terrorist group which has taken advantage of political and security vacuums in Iraq, Syria and Libya to achieve the most significant victories an Islamic terrorist group has ever gained since the early 20th century. While the Iraqi Air Force and Army Aviation Corps started to heavily use their limited resources to slow down ISIL progress in Iraq and prevent the occupation of Baghdad, the US conducted 'Operation Inherent Resolve' in Iraq (beginning 15 June 2014) and then in Syria (from 22 September 2014) in order to limit ISIL/ Daesh power. USAF, USMC or USN Air Forces - as well as the naval aviation forces of 17 more US allies - operated dozens of their combat aircraft from nine air bases in seven Middle Eastern and European countries, as well as their aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, in order to perform thousands of combat sorties against ISIL during 'Operation Inherent Resolve' or their own operations such as 'Chammal', 'Impact', 'Okra' and 'Shader' during the first phase of the air campaign between 31 August 2014 and 30 September 2015. By the time Russia s role in the Syrian war theater began, the second phase of the air war on ISIL had started - but this time, to totally eliminate its existence in Syria and Iraq; and it was not just the Russian Air Force... the Allied air forces, led by USAF, significantly broadened their presence in the air war, using new tactics targeting all financial axes of the terror group including its oil industry. Book excerpt: Political Rationale and International Consequences of the War in Libya focuses on the international intervention in Libya in 2011, and tries to answer two broad questions; (1) What was the political rationale for the various actors to proceed as they did in the lead-up and conduct of the military intervention in Libya?, (2) What are the consequences of the UN-authorized military intervention in Libya? R2P was the public raison d'être of the war, and an important legitimizing factor of the intervention. Still, the humanitarian situation was a necessary, but not in and by itself an adequate precondition for intervention. A number of factors coalesced to enable the intervention. While the humanitarian situation triggered the intervention, in reality a variety of national interests governed the approach by the various international actors, and more often than not, these motives were not rooted in the particular circumstances in Libya. The book offers a combination of unique perspectives. While the perspectives of the US, France, and the UK on the Libyan Crisis/War have been well documented, the Arabic and Scandinavian political and military dynamics have been much less so. While the perspectives of NATO, the UN, and R2P have been debated, the view from the Arab League and African Union (AU) have been less in focus. The volume redresses that imbalance and offers the most broad-ranging analysis yet of a key moment in recent international relations.
