Book excerpt: Ion exchange column elution methods for the separation of americium and curium using tartrate and lactate solutions have been developed which are superior to citrate elutions. Tartrate elutions are suitable for slow separations and lactate elutions are satisfactory for general use where rapid separations are required. Fission and spallation products were isolated from Pu239 targets which had been bombarded with alpha particles of 21 to 37 Mev energy. Fission yield curves as well as fission and spallation excitation functions are presented and discussed in terms of odd-even and Z2/A effects. The high cross sections observed for the (a, 2n) and (a, p2n) reactions were surprising results from this investigation. In the course of the Pu239 bombardments, studies of the decay schemes of Am24°, Cm24°, and Cm241 were undertaken. Decay energy and half-1ife information on all of the transmercury nuclides has been collected and systematized. Trends on the energy surface for alpha energies, beta energies, nucleon binding energies, and Bohr-Wheeler parameters are presented. These energy systematics have led to a complete tabulation of the masses of the isotopes of the elements above mercury. Predictions of nuclear properties are included for some isotopes of elements 99 through 103.

Book excerpt: The long-lived nuclides of the americium and curium elements are of interest for their use in certain safeguard applications and for nuclear reactor burnup studies in waste management. Recommended values are presented for /sup 241,242m,243/Am, and for /sup 242,243,244,245,246,247,248,250/Cm. These values result from a consistent evaluation of all these half-lives. These preliminary estimates were presented earlier. The uncertainties are provided at the 95% confidence limit for each of the recommended values. It will be noted that many of the recommended errors considerably exceed errors quoted by individual authors in their publication, by up to an order of magnitude, e.g. the total half-life of /sup 242,246,248/Cm and the spontaneous fission half-life of 244Cm. These preliminary estimates for the half-lives were given previously. Efforts continue to reevaluate the various experiments to better gauge the systematic errors involved and reassess the total error.

Book excerpt: Am and Cm exist in the trivalent state under conditions practical in reprocessing, and their chemistry is very similar to that of the rare earths which are present in relatively large amount as major fission products. Conceptual processes to recover Am and Cm, therefore, usually include two separate cycles. The first is the recovery of Am, Cm, and any transcurium actinides, along with the lanthanides, but hopefully separated from all the rest of the fission products and bulk chemicals used in processing, like sodium nitrate, iron, and sulfate. The second cycle is the partition of Am, Cm, and possibly heavier actinides like Cf, from the fission product rare earths. The first cycle, co-recovery of lanthanides and actinides, can, in principle, be accomplished by several methods including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. Each has its own problems and limitations, as well as different interactions with the second cycle. The methods of cation exchange and oxalate precipitation are discussed.
