Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Radioactivity of Lead From these observations it would appear that the rise in the conductivity of the air in both cylinders may be divided into two parts and ascribed to different causes; the one being associated with some change in the surface of the metals used in the construction of the cylinders. And the other with some substance which becomes diffused throughout the air, and can be blown out with it. With cylinder No. 1 the part due to the first cause was very small, and in no case exceeded 10 or 12 per cent. Of the minimum reading obtained for the conductivity. The second part, too, was very definite with this cylinder, and when the maximum conductivity had been reached it corresponded to a reading of between 25 and 3 divisions per minute. Book Radioactivity and Radioactive Substances

Download or read book Radioactivity and Radioactive Substances written by James Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radioactivity and Radioactive Substances: An Introduction to the Study of Radioactive Substances and Their Radiations I have read with pleasure this little book of my friend Dr. J. Chadwick. It is a clear and accurate account of radioactive phenomena written by one who has a first-hand knowledge of the facts. For the beginner, the treatment of the subject gains in clearness by using, as the author has done, the modern conceptions of atomic structure and by disregard of the historical order of discovery. To all those who are interested in the development of our knowledge of this fascinating subject I can strongly recommend this book as a simple, concise, and accurate statement of the main facts and theories. Book Radium and Radioactivity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Radium and Radioactivity Classic Reprint written by A. Thomas Cameron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium and Radioactivity The properties peculiar to radium are traceable to the actions of the radiations. Such properties are' action on photographic plates, power of producing beautiful scintillations and coloured phosphorescence with zinc blende and certain other minerals, power to bring about many chemical actions, continual and relatively considerable evolution of heat, and various beneficial therapeutic actions which have resulted from its application in medicine. We, must, therefore, study these radiations with exactness, and must consider their mode of produc tion. The substances producing them are known. Book Studies in Radioactivity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Radioactivity Classic Reprint written by W. H. Bragg and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Radioactivity In this book I have dealt mainly with the phenomena attending the passage of the a, B, 7 and X rays through matter. It is a subject which I have myself tried to investigate: and the book was undertaken in response to a request that I should write a short account of my experiments and of the conclusions to which they had led. My own work has been, however, so bound up with and dependent upon that of others that it could not be considered by itself with any profit. I have therefore confined the book within the limits, not of my own enquiries, but rather of the field in which the enquiries have been made. Though this is a limited portion of the domain of radioactivity, it has been difficult to consider it in any detail in the space allowed. I have tried only to give an account of the principal features of the special subject, and to draw together the things which most invite comparison. The statement is far from complete in a historical sense, and the reader who would learn more details of the work which has been done should consult the original memoirs, or books which can really claim to be treatises on radioactivity, such as those of Rutherford or Mme. Curie. Certain general conclusions seem to me to follow from a comparative study of the three types of radiation, and I hope that I have made this appear from what I have written. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of the Radio-Elements Radioactivity has introduced into the science of chemistry a new conception. The radioactive elements are radio active because they are in progress of spontaneous change. The chemistry of the radio-elements is concerned largely with the nature of the products of these changes, their isolation and separate identification. Book Radio Activity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Radio Activity Classic Reprint written by Ernest Rutherford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radio-Activity An examination of natural substances, in order to see if they gave out dark radiations similar to X rays, led to the discovery of the radio-active bodies which possess the property of spontaneously emitting radiations, invisible to the eye, but readily detected by their action on photographic plates and their power of discharging electrified bodies. A detailed study of the radio-active bodies has led to the discovery of many new and surprising phenomena which have thrown much light, not only on the nature of the radiations themselves, but also on the processes occurring in those substances. Notwithstanding the complex nature of the phenomena, the know ledge of the subject has advanced with great rapidity, and a large amount of experimental data has now been accumulated.
