At a early date some of the Radcliffe became large landowners, the families of Radcliffe of Winmarleigh, of Ordsall and of Smithills. Fist of the family was summoned to the house of Lords was John Radcliffe, who in 1485 was summoned as Lord Fitzwalter, his mother being the heiress of the Fitzwalter.
