The experiment employs a toroidal magnet to focus electrons scattered at 8{sup o} {+-} 2{sup o}, corresponding to Q{sup 2} {approx} 0.03 (GeV/c){sup 2}, on eight Cerenkov detectors located in the focal plane of the spectrometer. Since the asymmetry is proportional to Q{sup 2}, it is crucial to obtain an accurate measure of the acceptance-averaged value of Q{sup 2}. A tracking system will be used in a low-rate counting mode, allowing individual events to be observed. This will enable a determination of the average Q{sup 2} by measuring the scattering angle and interaction vertex, for mapping the response across the surface of the Cerenkov detectors, and for the dilution of the Cerenkov detector signal by background.

Book excerpt: Describes the basics of bar-code systems that can be used to maintain inventories or track pesticides, equipment, tree-marking paint, or other materials. Bar codes use a series of vertical black lines and spaces to record data. The standard used to convert data to a bar code is called a symbology. More than 250 symbologies are in use. Forest Service users should consider using symbology code 128, the standard used in the shipping industry. It can encode all 128 ASCII characters (lower-case and capital letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and other symbols) and can be used to create high-, medium-, and low-density bar codes. The label lines are closely spaced in high-density bar codes, allowing more data to be stored, but the label might not be read as reliably. Setup and the initial inventory entry are usually the most time-consuming steps in establishing a bar-code system. A bar code might represent the identification of a container of pesticide. Software, usually some form of database, stores additional information about the container of pesticide, such as when it was purchased, how much the container holds, how much has been used, and when the container was disposed of. The bar code would be placed on the pesticide container when it was received. Each time some of the pesticide was used, a scanner would record the bar code and the user would enter appropriate information about the use. Such a system would allow careful tracking of the use of pesticides and the software would allow the user to prepare periodic reports. This Tech Tip considers three sample uses of bar-code systems by Forest Service employees: tracking tools, inventorying chemicals and material safety data sheets, and reporting on pesticides. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics represents our present best understanding of the elementary particles and three of the four fundamental forces. One of the most important and challenging tasks of modern particle physics is to test, and perhaps, to find the evidence for new physics not contained in the Standard Model. One such test, the $Q_{weak}$ experiment, was conducted at JLab in Newport News, VA, from 2010 to 2012. The goal of the experiment is to measure the value of the weak charge of proton, $Q_{weak}$ to a 4\% precision, which, if it confirms the Standard Model prediction, will provide tighter constraints on new physics; or, if it is in disagreement with that prediction, will provide clear evidence for new physics. In this experiment, an 85\% polarized electron beam with 150 $\mu A$ current is used on a 35cm thick hydrogen target to make elastic electron-proton scattering happen at a four-momentum transfer $Q^2=0.03GeV/c^2$. To determine the weak charge, we must also precisely determine the kinematics of the scattering process, namely, the $Q^2$. In order to reach this goal, the hardware, a particle tracking system and special analysis software, the Qweak Tracking Reconstruction software, are both needed. In this dissertation, a full description of the tracking software and the prelimary analysis of the $Q^2$ and the first subset of production data will be given. The proton's weak charge $Q^P_{Weak}$ was measured to be $0.064\pm0.012$, which is consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model.

Book excerpt: Augmented reality (AR) systems are often used to superimpose virtual objects or information on a scene to improve situational awareness. Delays in the display system or inaccurate registration of objects destroy the sense of immersion a user experiences when using AR systems. AC electromagnetic trackers are ideal for these applications when combined with head orientation prediction to compensate for display system delays. Unfortunately, these trackers do not perform well in environments that contain conductive or ferrous materials due to magnetic field distortion without expensive calibration techniques. In our work we focus on both the prediction and distortion compensation aspects of this application, developing a "small footprint" predictive filter for display lag compensation and a simplified calibration system for AC magnetic trackers. In the first phase of our study we presented a novel method of tracking angular head velocity from quaternion orientation using an Extended Kalman Filter in both single model (DQEKF) and multiple model (MMDQ) implementations. In the second phase of our work we have developed a new method of mapping the magnetic field generated by the tracker without high precision measurement equipment. This method uses simple fixtures with multiple sensors in a rigid geometry to collect magnetic field data in the tracking volume. We have developed a new algorithm to process the collected data and generate a map of the magnetic field distortion that can be used to compensate distorted measurement data.
