Book The Qur an Through Modern Standard Arabic

Download or read book The Qur an Through Modern Standard Arabic written by and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of this book is to help non-native speakers, who are in the elementary and beginner levels of learning the Arabic language, improve their skills to begin reading the Holy Qur'an and grasp a better understanding of its text. This publication will concentrate on shortening the period of time it takes to reach mastery of reading and comprehending Arabic at a relatively basic level, which provides students with the foundation needed to comprehend the literature style of the Qur'an. The idea behind this simple, yet overlooked process is to provide the student with the necessary and basic skills required to process information during the act of reading. The book adopted the teaching of "Juz' Amma" (30) beginning with very short Surahs, where the teacher walks along-side the learner. For example, within this publication, surat An-Naas, is a great beginning point because it contains a limited amount of vocabulary and gives a good perspective on how to understand the Holy Qur'an's meanings through its unique style after studying the basics of the Arabic language. After the student demonstrates a solid understanding and higher proficiency of reading MSA (Modern Standard Arabic), the teacher will present the Qur'anic script to the student and have him or her read directly from the Holy Qur'an. Adopting this method associated with other strategies will help achieve two goals in teaching and learning: the first being, help those who are fascinated by the Arabic language get comfortable with the terminology and the expressions of the language of the Holy Qur'an. The second goal achieved is having those who understand the Holy Qur'an interpret the information to others. Ultimately, the students will learn Modern Standard Arabic, which will then be applied in reading and understanding the Holy Qur'an (Tafseer of Qur'anic content). The scope of this method is to assist as many people as possible. It targets those who are studying within the field of the Arabic language and culture, as well as students and teachers of Islamic studies, language institutes, Islamic schools, and Arabic schools.

Book The Qur an and Modern Arabic Literary Criticism

Download or read book The Qur an and Modern Arabic Literary Criticism written by Mohammad Salama and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Qur'an and Modern Arabic Literary Criticism, Mohammad Salama navigates the labyrinthine semantics that underlie this sacred text and inform contemporary scholarship. The book presents reflections on Quranic exegesis by explaining - and distinguishing between - interpretation and explication. While the book focuses on Quranic and literary scholarship in twentieth-century Egypt from Taha Husayn to Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, it also engages with an immense tradition of scholarship from the classical period to the present, including authors such as Abu 'Ubayda, Ibn 'Abbas, al-Razi, and al-Tabari. Salama argues that, over the centuries, the Arabic language experienced semantic and phonological shifts, creating a lacuna in understanding the Qur'an and bringing contemporary readers under the spell of hermeneutical and parochial interpretations. He demonstrates that while this lacuna explains much of the intellectual poverty of traditionalist approaches to Quranic exegesis, the work of the modern Egyptian school of academics marks a sharp departure from the programmed conservatism of Islamist and Salafi exegetics. Through analyses of the writings of these intellectuals, the author shows that a fresh look at the sources and a revolutionary attempt to approach the Qur'an could render tradition itself an impetus for an alternative aesthetics-contextual, open, and unfolding.

Book Modern Arabic

Download or read book Modern Arabic written by Clive Holes and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised and updated edition of Modern Arabic takes this authoritative, concise linguistic description of the structure and use of modern Arabic to an invaluable new level. Clive Holes traces the development of the Arabic language from Classical Arabic, the written language used in the 7th century for the Qur'an and poetry, through the increasingly symbiotic use of Modern Standard Arabic or MSA (the language of writing and formal speech) and dialectal Arabic (the language of normal conversation). He shows how Arabic has been shaped over the centuries by migration, urbanization, and education--giving us "a balanced, dispassionate, and accurate picture of the structures, functions, and varieties of the contemporary Arabic language." Holes explains the structural characteristics--phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and lexical and stylistic developments--that the majority of the dialects share, as distinguished from Modern Standard Arabic. He also shows how native speakers use both types of Arabic for different purposes, with MSA being the language of power and control as used on television and in political speeches, and the dialects serving as the language of intimacy and domesticity. He further shows how MSA and spoken dialects are not as compartmentalized as one might be led to believe. Modern Arabic illustrates the use of the Arabic language in real life, whether in conversation, news bulletins and newspaper articles, serious literature, or song. This new edition takes into account research published in several areas of Arabic linguistics since the first edition was published in 1995. It includes more extensive comment on the North African Arabic vocabulary of Modern Standard Arabic, more information about "mixed" varieties of written Arabic that are not in MSA (especially in Egypt), updated references, explanations, and many new examples. All Arabic is transcribed, except for an appendix presenting the Arabic alphabet and script. Students of the Arabic language will find Modern Arabic without peer--as will those general linguists who are interested in discovering how Arabic compares structurally and sociolinguistically with European languages.
