Book excerpt: "Great is the guilt of an unnecessary war." "There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live." "[As president] I refused to suffer in silence. I sighed, sobbed, and groaned, and sometimes screeched and screamed. And I must confess to my shame and sorrow that I sometimes swore." Statesman, philosopher, devoted family man, and notable wit, John Adams achieved fame first as an architect of the American Revolution and later as America's second president. Known for his brutal honesty and devotion to justice, Adams was also a prolific writer and public speaker, and his words on patriotism, democracy, war, religion, his fellow man, and civic duty reflect the gentle musings and razor-sharp opinions of an accomplished thinker and profoundly compassionate human being. The Quotable John Adams is a rich compilation of more than five hundred quotes certain to give Adams buffs a greater understanding of this remarkable founding father. Also included in this volume are insights offered by his wife Abigail, children, contemporaries, and historians, as well as interesting Adams facts and trivia. This is the quintessential book for anyone fascinated by this truly great man.

Book The Quotable Abigail Adams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that her letters âeoegive me more entertainment than all the speeches I hear. There is more good Thoughts, fine strokes and Mother Wit in them than I hear in the whole Week. An Ounce of Mother Wit is worth a Pound of Clergy.âe The Quotable Abigail Adams invites you to enjoy Abigail Adamsâe(tm)s wit and wisdom on a wide range of subjects, drawn from writings throughout her lifetime. Abigail shared her penetrating and often humorous observations with correspondents ranging from friends and neighbors to family members to heads of state, offering lively opinions on human nature, politics, culture, and family life. Selected and arranged by topic, these quotations provide an entertaining introduction to the thought and character of Americaâe(tm)s founding mother. They are accompanied by a biographical introduction, source notes, chronology, and a comprehensive index, making this book the primary resource for those meeting this remarkable woman for the first time as well as for her longtime admirers. âeoeThe Service of this Government is not a Bed of Roses, in any department of it.âe âeoeA Nation which does not respect itself, cannot expect to receive it from others.âe âeoeGentlemen are not half as particular as the Ladies are in their details.âe âeoeNo woman of sense will ever make her Husband an object of Ridicule; for in proportion as she lowers him she lessens herself.âe âeoeA woman may forgive the man she loves an indiscretion, but never a neglect.âe âeoeThere is no musick sweeter in the Ears of parents, than the well earned praises of their children.âe âeoeBetter is a little contentment than great Treasure; and trouble therewith.âe âeoeTime, which improves youth, every year furrows the brow of age."

  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2014-05-06
  • ISBN : 0062199323
  • Pages : 571 pages

Download or read book John Quincy Adams written by Fred Kaplan and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There is much to praise in this extensively researched book, which is certainly one of the finest biographies of a sadly underrated man. . . . [Kaplan is] a master historian and biographer. . . . If he could read this biography, Adams would be satisfied that he had been fairly dealt with at last.” —Carol Berkin, Washington Post In this fresh and illuminating biography, Fred Kaplan, the acclaimed author of Lincoln, brings into focus the dramatic life of John Quincy Adams—the little-known and much-misunderstood sixth president of the United States and the first son of John and Abigail Adams—and reveals how Adams' inspiring, progressive vision guided his life and helped shape the course of America. Kaplan draws on a trove of unpublished archival material to trace Adams' evolution from his childhood during the Revolutionary War to his brilliant years as Secretary of State to his time in the White House and beyond. He examines Adams' myriad sides: the public and private man, the statesman and writer, the wise thinker and passionate advocate, the leading abolitionist and fervent federalist. In these ways, Adams was a predecessor of Lincoln and, later, FDR and Obama. This sweeping biography makes clear how Adams' forward-thinking values, his definition of leadership, and his vision for the nation's future is as much about twenty-first-century America as it is about Adams' own time. Meticulously researched and masterfully written, John Quincy Adams paints a rich portrait of this brilliant leader and his vision for a young nation.

Entrance Into Public Life -- The Congress Op 1774 -- Services From That Time Until The Declaration Of Independence. During the passage of the events described in the last chapter, in which the executive and judicial powers of the colonyhad been brought to a stand, and Hutchinson, the head of the loyalist party, had, in despair, determined to abandon the struggle, the British ministry was engaged in maturing new plans to overcome the resistance of Massachusetts. Lord North, no longer indulging in the sanguine anticipations of an early return to peace by the voluntary submission of the colonists, was now to become the exponent of the royal indignation. In this indignation the people of Great Britain much more largely shared after the news arrived of the general rejection of the tea. And it was most particularly directed against the town of Boston, because Boston had marked her proceedings with the most aggravated form of resistance. The chastisement for these offences was defined by the minister, through the introduction into Parliament, in quick succession, of the three bills, which shut up the port of Boston, which, under the name of regulation, annihilated the charter of the colony, and which transferred the jurisdiction over cases of riot and tumult to the courts of the mother country. Simultaneously with the passage of these minatory acts, came the preparation of a military force deemed adequate to enforce them. The executive authority, no longer entrusted to men in civil life, was vested in General Gage, an officer high in the ranks of the regular army, at the same time that his command was extended by the transfer of more regiments to Massachusetts. Eleven in number were concentrated at last, but instead of being ready...

Book excerpt: The author of more than 2,000 books and pamphlets, Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet, 1694-1778) was one of the most prolific writers of the eighteenth century, and also one of the wittiest and most insightful. This unique collection of over 800 of Voltaire’s wisest passages and choicest bons mots runs the gamut on topics from adultery to Zoroaster, in both English and French. Drawing from a wide range of his publications, private letters, and remarks recorded by his contemporaries, The Quotable Voltaire includes material never before gathered in a single volume. Book The Wisdom of John Adams

Download or read book The Wisdom of John Adams written by Kees de Mooy and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men and women who shaped our world—in their own words. The Wisdom Library invites you on a journey through the lives and works of the world’s greatest thinkers and leaders. Compiled by scholars, each book presents excerpts from the most important and revealing writings of the most remarkable minds of all time. THE WISDOM OF JOHN ADAMS “Straight is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to liberty, and few nations, if any, have found it.” John Adams was America’s second president, first vice president, and a leading revolutionary, yet his remarkable accomplishments have sometimes been overshadowed by his peers, Washington and Jefferson. David McCullough’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography has helped reestablish Adams as a truly heroic figure in his own right—intelligent, passionate, fiercely patriotic, and staunchly committed to the ideals of the United States. Now The Wisdom of John Adams further reveals—in Adams’ own words—this distinguished leader’s brilliance, foresight, and conviction. Here are excerpts from his greatest speeches and published works, including his oration on independence in the Continental Congress; Thoughts on Government, later the guide for several state constitutions; and his three-volume Defense of the Constitution of the United States. The Wisdom of John Adams also includes a selection of his forthright correspondence, as well as his tender love letters to his wife and strongest ally, Abigail—in all, essential reading for any student of the “American Experiment.”
