During Quinn and Betty's investigation Quinn bumps heads with the local authority in the form of Detective DeLaMonte a renegade dismissed from the New Orleans Police department. Eleanor Pennyworth finds Quinn Moosebroker's name in an address book with the word 'trusted' written in pencil. When her partner is found dead in his Clearview Terrace home, she calls in Quinn to investigate a missing literary manuscript known as Night of the Falling. Quinn and Betty find themselves in a world of book people and rare book treasures. Quinn relays a conversation about a young man's dream of murder to Betty he overheard on a quiet Saturday afternoon at the local barbershop. The story hits Betty so hard that while she tried to sleep that night she received a visitor in the form of a little boy at the foot of her bed. The haunting guest and Quinn's growing loyalty to Betty lead them to a government cover-up at a North Carolina Marine Corp Camp and to an aging Marine and his estranged wife. On the return home, along a cold dark southern highway, Betty adjusts the Town and Country's radio and a broadcast that correctly describes the night he was shot and his partner was killed sends them on a detour deep into a steel town and Quinn's past. The investigation undoes Dolan Ó Braonáin a local crime boss and exposes the far reaching tentacles of his organization. An innocent trip to the grand opening of a Clearview Terrace thrift store and an unexpected find send this detective duo skirting along the edges of stolen Nazi loot as they do their best to find the rightful owner of a piece of art that has survived all that has come its way. Clearview Terrace will never be the same.

Book excerpt: While it is well known that the Delian problems are impossible to solve with a straightedge and compass – for example, it is impossible to construct a segment whose length is cube root of 2 with these instruments – the discovery of the Italian mathematician Margherita Beloch Piazzolla in 1934 that one can in fact construct a segment of length cube root of 2 with a single paper fold was completely ignored (till the end of the 1980s). This comes as no surprise, since with few exceptions paper folding was seldom considered as a mathematical practice, let alone as a mathematical procedure of inference or proof that could prompt novel mathematical discoveries. A few questions immediately arise: Why did paper folding become a non-instrument? What caused the marginalisation of this technique? And how was the mathematical knowledge, which was nevertheless transmitted and prompted by paper folding, later treated and conceptualised? Aiming to answer these questions, this volume provides, for the first time, an extensive historical study on the history of folding in mathematics, spanning from the 16th century to the 20th century, and offers a general study on the ways mathematical knowledge is marginalised, disappears, is ignored or becomes obsolete. In doing so, it makes a valuable contribution to the field of history and philosophy of science, particularly the history and philosophy of mathematics and is highly recommended for anyone interested in these topics.

The owner's name is Emerald Wells, called Em by everyone in town. She does the waitressing. Carl from Carl's Automotive stops in for breakfast every morning to say 'Hey.' He sits on the stool at the end of the counter. He likes that Em pats his shoulder the first time she passes by. He also likes to watch Gabby the owner of Let's Dress Up as she rushes across the street from her shop to the Cafe for her morning coffee and whatever looks good in the glass-domed dessert tray. The Cafe is the center of the world for Earl, Em, Carl, Dale the Sheriff who has known them all for their entire lives. The cast also include the Townsends whose place is out on the highway where they tend their orchards and Tom who is retired and bought the empty gas station at the turnoff to Emerald Wells and converted it first to his abode, then The Trading Post. The group meets monthly and shares their writing in the form of poetry readings. They call the event, Speakeasy Night. They put on their go to meeting clothes, share their poetry, eat desserts and have a good time drinking special tea out of Em's Mom's china cups. Earl, Carl, and Jimmy served as Marines in Korea. Jimmy did not come home; Army Captain Harold Tomlin was one second late arriving in his tank to save him. Harold shows up in Emerald Wells and is so taken with Em that a courtship begins. What genre do you ask? It's a western. It's a poetry book. It's a romance. It's a food book. It's the lost biography of the USA. In my heart, I am from Emerald Wells.

Cyrus and Angel have lived a peaceful existence in their valley as caretakers of Angel's Field a way station for young girls on their journey to heaven.
