Book The Quicksilver Resources of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Quicksilver Resources of California Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quicksilver Resources of California Gentlemen: I have the honor to transmit the results of the recent work of the State Mining Bureau in investigating the Quicksilver Resources of California, and which are embodied in Bulletin No. 27. This is the third of a series of bulletins, issued under my direction, on special features of the mining industry in California, and in which will be found a description of the geology of all the deposits of economic importance in the State, together with maps and such data as it was possible to obtain. The geological field work for this bulletin was performed by Mr. William Forstner, Assistant in the Field, of the State Mining Bureau. No description of any mine or prospect, nor of the geology of any part of the territory, has been given except after personal investigation by Mr. Forstner. In treating of the geology and the genesis of ore deposition, subjects of which differences of opinion exist, endeavors have been made to present as briefly and clearly as possible the different opinions, and some suggestions have been added which have resulted from Mr. Forstner's personal observation. In the chapter on the metallurgy of quicksilver, it has been the aim more to give the general principles upon which the different methods of treatment are based than to make a mere detailed description of the different installations. Book Quicksilver Resources of California

Download or read book Quicksilver Resources of California written by Walter Wadsworth Bradley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quicksilver Resources of California: With a Section on Metallurgy and Ore-Dressing The important uses of quicksilver are the recovery of gold and silver from ores by amalgamation, the manufacture of fulminate for explosive caps, of electrical appliances and scientific apparatus, and in the preparation of drugs, vermilion, and an anti-fouling paint for ships' bottoms. Another interesting use to which quicksilver is also put, though in which it is not 'consumed, ' is as a floating bearing for the re volving lenses of lighthouses. About 600 pounds of quicksilver are required (depending on the size of the light) - being placed in a ciren lar groove or channel. The lens or lighting unit is set on a pontoon which. In turn, rests and revolves on the mercury. As the metal is not consumed, the loss after installation is insignificant. By far the great est consumption of quicksilver is in the manufacture of fulminate and of drugs. The increased adoption of the cyanide process in place of amalgamation in the treatment of gold and silver ores has materially decreased that demand for quicksilver of recent years, particularly in the western United States and in Mexico. The newest use for quick silver is the introduction of a small amount into the cylinders of steam turbines to improve the vapor pressure and thus increase efficiency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quicksilver: Abstract From 'Mineral Resources of the United States, Calendar Years 1883 and 1884" Present status of the industry. - The quicksilver industry is in a de pressed condition. The production has fallen off largely, but this has not had the effect of stimulating prices to a great extent, though just at the close of 1884 a slight improvement occurred. The leading causes of this depression are the sharp foreign competition in the markets of the world and the decrease in the demand for quicksilver in amalgamatin g mills. An important outlet for domestic quicksilver, the'manufacture of vermilion in China, is apparently closed for the present, the Chinese having obtained their supply in 1884 from other sources. For several years the few California mines in operation have either been worked with a slender margin of profit or at a loss; and one by one the list of producers has dwindled, the survivors being of course the richest and best equipped establishments. The New Almaden was the only one which paid a dividend in 1884. It cannot be said that the outlook for the immediate future is especially cheering. With many metallic prod ucts a cheapening in price means an increase in consumption as, for instance, in the case of copper, which finds a partial relief in the more extended field caused by the growing use of brass in the arts; or as with Bessemer steel, which is gradually supplanting other formerly cheaper materials of construction. The quicksilver consumption, on the contrary, is very inelastic. Important discoveries of gold and sil ver ores suitable for amalgamation would have a favorable effect on the quicksilver trade, but it is not likely that the amalgamation method will regain its former position in precious-metal metallurgy, as compared with smelting and leaching processes. New utilizations, such as those mentioned in a subsequent paragraph, may, however lighten the mar ket. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mercury and the Making of California

Download or read book Mercury and the Making of California written by Andrew Scott Johnston and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mercury and the Making of California, Andrew Johnston’s multidisciplinary examination of the history and cultural landscapes of California’s mercury-mining industry, raises mercury to its rightful place alongside gold and silver in the development of the American West. Gold and silver could not be refined without mercury; therefore, its production and use were vital to securing power and wealth in the West. The first industrialized mining in California, mercury mining had its own particular organization, structure, and built environments. These were formed within the Spanish Empire, subsequently transformed by British imperial ambitions, and eventually manipulated by American bankers and investors. In California mercury mining also depended on a workforce differentiated by race and ethnicity. The landscapes of work and camp and the relations among the many groups involved in the industry—Mexicans, Chileans, Spanish, English, Irish, Cornish, American, and Chinese—form a crucial chapter in the complex history of race and ethnicity in the American West. This pioneering study explicates the mutual structuring of the built environments of the mercury-mining industry and the emergence of California’s ethnic communities. Combining rich documentary sources with a close examination of the existing physical landscape, Johnston explores both the detail of everyday work and life in the mines and the larger economic and social structures in which mercury mining was enmeshed, revealing the significance of mercury mining for Western history.

Book Fast Folks Or the Early Days of California

Download or read book Fast Folks Or the Early Days of California written by Joseph A. Nunes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fast Folks, or the Early Days of California: A Comedy, in Five Acts Dear Sir: The following pages are the result of some hours of relaxation during a professional sojourn in the mountains of California, and profess to be no more than a reflex of some of the phases of society in the early history of that noble State - at a time shortly after the discovery of gold there; when the tide of emigration flowed like a torrent from all parts of our beloved Union, and found no resting place until the distant Pacific coast had been reached. The Comedy, (if I may dignify it with that title, ) was written without any intention of having it either represented or published, but chance subjected it to the criticism of an artist of some celebrity, whose persuasions were potent enough to overcome the natural diffidence of untried authorship. It was played, and successfully, and having, to that extent, become public property, I have concluded to put it in a form in which it may either serve to amuse my friends, or, in the hands of my enemies, be a vehicle of punishment for the presumption of having written it. Of all the Statesmen of the present generation, California has most reason to be grateful to you, for you have been her firm, undeviating friend from the period of her first introduction into the glorious sisterhood of States, and nothing that your great talents or influence could achieve has been withheld from her, or from the development of her permanent prosperity. Under these circumstances, duty would prompt, even if inclination did not suggest, that the tribute of this "Dedication" should be tendered to you. I trust you will accept of it in the spirit in which it is offered, without criticising too severely the pages on which it is inscribed; for if these could be worthy of your acceptance, they would surely possess merits which would entitle them to more than an ephemeral existence. Book excerpt: Philip Whalen was an American poet, Zen Buddhist, and key figure in the literary and artistic scene that unfolded in San Francisco in the 1950s and Õ60s.ÊWhen the Beat writers came West, Whalen became a revered, much-loved member of the group.ÊErudite, shy, and profoundly spiritual, his presence not only moved his immediate circle of Beat cohorts, but his powerful, startling, innovative work would come to impact American poetry to the present day. Drawing on WhalenÕs journals and personal correspondenceÑparticularly with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Snyder, Kyger, Welch, and McClure ÑDavid Schneider shows how deeply bonded these intimates were, supporting one another in their art and their spiritual paths. Schneider, himself an ordained priest, provides an insiderÕs view of WhalenÕs struggles and breakthroughs in his thirty years as a Zen monk. When Whalen died in 2002 as the retired Abbot of the Hartford Street Zen Center, his own teacher referred to him as a patriarch of the Western lineage of Buddhism. Crowded by Beauty chronicles the course of WhalenÕs life, focusing on his unique, eccentric, humorous, and literary-religious practice.
