Book Reconstructing Minds and Landscapes

Download or read book Reconstructing Minds and Landscapes written by Marja Tuominen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental and material reconstruction was an ongoing process after World War II, and it still is. This volume combines a detailed treatment of post-war cultural reconstruction in Finnish Lapland – a region on the geographical and historical margins of its nation-state – with comparative case studies of silent post-war memory from other European countries The contributors shed light on key aspects of cultural reconstruction generally: disruptions of national narratives, difficulties of post-war cultural demobilisation, sites of memory, visual narratives of post-war reconstruction, and manifestations of trans-generational experiences of cultural reconstruction. Exploration of the less conspicuous aspects of mental reconstruction reveals various forms of post-war silence and silencing which have halted or hindered different groups of people in their mental return to peace. Rather than focusing on the “executive level” of material reconstruction, the volume turns its gaze towards those who experienced the return to peace in the mental, societal, and historical margins: members of ethnic, religious, and cultural minorities, women, and children. The chapters draw on archival and other original sources, personal memories, autobiographical interpretations, and academic debate. The volume is relevant for scholars and advanced students in the fields of cultural history, art history, and cultural studies.

Book The Russian Civil War 1918 22

Download or read book The Russian Civil War 1918 22 written by David Bullock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian Civil War is the most important civil war of the 20th century, changing the lives of over half a billion people and dramatically shaping the geography of Europe, the Far East and Asia. Over a four-year period 20 countries battled in a crucible that would give birth to Communist revolutions worldwide and the Cold War. David Bullock offers a fresh perspective on this conflict, examining the forces involved, as well as the fascinating intervention by Allied forces. At the dawn of modern war, as cavalry duelled with tanks, aircraft, and armoured trains along shifting fronts, this title tells a military story enacted against a backdrop of political and social revolution and within the context of immense human loss. The reader cannot fail to be moved by the rare photographs and illustrations that make this history come alive.

Book Allied Intervention in Russia 1918 1919

Download or read book Allied Intervention in Russia 1918 1919 written by John Swettenham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When originally published in 1967 and using archive material from official records in Ottawa, this book threw new light on the motives and actions of the intervening powers. Allied intervention took place in three main areas: Northern and Southern Russia as well as Siberia. Canada was the major Commonwealth contributor to the intervention in Siberia and a superfial account of the events and their political implications is contained in the official history of the Canadian Army in the First World War. This book discusses the subject in depth and from an international perspective. In this critical assessment the story of the Allied operations in Russia has been written against the double background of the issues and events of the Russian Civil War itself and of the international intrigues and rivalries of the Allies.

Book From Victoria to Vladivostok

Download or read book From Victoria to Vladivostok written by Benjamin Isitt and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Isitt's work is new, innovative, and important. He deftly weaves the Canadian working class oposition to war and the rising leftist sentiment among workers with the inner life of the Siberian Expedition itself...No less importamt. he melds a national story with an international one. He reveals new aspects of international cooperation in the attempt to suppress the Bolshevik revolution as well as international rivalries among the countries that intervened in in Russia."---Larry Hannant, editor of The Politics of Passion: Norman Behtune's Writing and Art" ""From Victoria to Vladivostok sheds new light on a part of Canadian history that previous scholars have written off as a mere sideshow, a rather embarrassing episode that had no impact on the First World War. In contrast, Isitt sees the problems that befell the Expedition as being rooted in conflicting views of Bolshevism in Canada, and defferent perceptions of the logic behind an intervention in Russia. In this, his contribution is both significant and original."---Jonathan Vance, author of Unlikely Soldiers: How Two Canadians Fought the Secret War against Nazi Occupation" "This highly readable and provocative book brings to life a forgotten chapter in the history of Canada and Russia-the journey of 4,200 Canadian soldiers from Victoria to Vladivostok in 1918 to help defeat Bolshevism. It illuminates how the Siberian Expedition exacerbated tensions within Canadian society at a time when a radicalized working class, many French-Canadians, and even the soldiers themselves objected to a military adventure designed to counter the Russian Revolution."--BOOK JACKET.
