Book Accompanying Young People on Their Spiritual Quest

Download or read book Accompanying Young People on Their Spiritual Quest written by Maxine Green and published by Church House Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals one of the most vital, yet under-researched, areas of youth ministry: how Christian adults can accompany young people in their spiritual quest or journey. For young people, discovering who they are is an exciting and essential quest. Accompanying them in this exploration offers a unique opportunity to enable them to grow in awareness and use their gifts in a creative way for themselves and for the community. Based on the Biblical model of Christ meeting with his disciples on the road to Emmaus, the authors show how we can be alongside young people and help them to develop their own confidence and maturity in their faith. They consider: What is accompanying? What is achieved by successful accompanying programmes? How does peer accompanying work? How leaders can develop accompanying programmes? The authors have developed their understanding of accompanying through real-life stories, and offer practical examples and models of good practice.

Book excerpt: "What can I do?" That was the question Diane Latiker asked of herself as she watched the teens in her Chicago neighborhood succumb at an alarming rate to gangs and gun violence. Her answer started small, inviting ten kids into her living room to talk about their struggles and dreams. But over the years it grew. With the help of God, her family, and many other people along the way, Diane's Kids Off the Block morphed from a personal crusade to do what she could into a nationally known program that has helped more than 3,000 at-risk Chicago teens. In this powerful, energizing book, she tells her incredible story to men and women who are sick of sitting behind their keyboards watching the world crumble and are ready to do something to make a difference. Through doubt, financial strain, and deep grief over lives lost, Diane has never lost her faith that God called her to this life-transforming work. In these pages she'll show you that God is calling you to do something too. Maybe something that feels small . . . definitely something that will change the world.

Book excerpt: Few outsiders have had the privilege to get to know Algeria and its youth so intimately-or to observe firsthand this pivotal chapter in the nation's history. It's a story that reveals much about the relationship between citizens and leaders, about the sanctity of human dignity, and about the power of dreams and the courage to pursue them. Nearly two-thirds of Algeria's population is under the age of 35. Growing up during or soon after the violent conflict that wracked Algeria during the 1990's, and amid the powerful influences of global online culture, this generation views the world much differently than their parents or grandparents do. The Algerian Dream: Youth and the Quest for Dignity invites readers to discover this generation, their hopes for the future and, most significantly, the frustrations that have brought them into the streets en masse since 2019, peacefully challenging a long-established order. After seven years living and working alongside these young people across Algeria, Andrew G. Farrand shares his insights on what makes the next generation tick in North Africa's sleeping giant.

Book African Youth in Contemporary Literature and Popular Culture

Download or read book African Youth in Contemporary Literature and Popular Culture written by Vivian Yenika-Agbaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how African youth are depicted in contemporary literature and popular culture, and discusses the different ways by which they attempt to construct personal and cultural identities through popular culture and social media outlets. The contributors approach the subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, looking at images in children’s and adolescent literature from Africa, and the African diaspora, from Nollywood and Hollywood movies, from popular magazines, and from youth cultures encountered directly through field experiences. The findings reveal that there are many stereotypes about Africa, African youth and black cultures, and that African youth are aware of these. Since they juggle multiple identities shaped by their ethnicities, race and religion, it is often a challenge for them to define themselves. As they also share a global youth culture that transcends these cultural markers, some take advantage of media outlets to voice their concerns and participate in political struggles. Others simply use these to promote their personal interests. Contributors ponder the challenges involved in constructing unique identities, offering ideas on how African youth are doing so successfully or not in different parts of the continent and the African diaspora, and thus offer new possibilities for youth studies.
