Book excerpt: The World of Zaylyn is a world of humans, elves, dwarves, fairy folk, centaurs, dragons, dragon-like humanoids, orcs, goblins, trolls, shape shifters, and many others yet to be discovered. With warriors, thieves, wizards, treasure, magic, strange creatures, danger, and adventure, this world is never dull. Evil, malicious creatures have entered into this world to do the bidding of an insane wizard, but can he control these beasts as he believes, and for what purpose? As the creatures slaughter his entire village, Vordin, narrowly escapes. He's told that the evil wizard has to be slain by the Sword of Anthrowst in order to send the creatures back to where they came from. Two thieves, an elf and her human companion, join Vordin in the quest as does an amateur wizard. The mysterious being they encounter, half human and half spider, is she friend or foe? Will they fall prey to the horrid evil monsters, trapped in a web of spells and ripped to pieces by huge dagger-like teeth and claws? How are they to even find this sword, wherever it may be, and the wizard for whom they only know a name? Encountering a mischievous fairy queen and her followers, vicious monsters, giant spiders within ancient underground passages, bounty hunters after the two thieves, plus so much more. Could there be bandits within the forest or a werewolf lurking about as a few believe? Worst of all, is the presence of a mysterious and evil vampiric being with immense power, called simply The Black Shadow. If he had a hand in this group coming together, what purpose does he intend for them? He wants them to complete their quest, saving Zaylyn from the wizard and his army of creatures, but why, especially when he could easily take care of the problem himself? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=59X2I-YyQH0

Book excerpt: Ever since Martin Banks and his fellow computer geeks discovered that reality is just a computer program to be happily hacked, they've been jaunting back and forth through time, posing as medieval wizards and having the epic adventures that other nerds can only dream of having. But even in their wildest fantasies, they never expected to end up at the mercy of the former apprentice whom they sent to prison for gross misuse of magic and all-around evil behavior. Who knew that the vengeful Todd would escape, then conjure a computer game packed with wolves, wenches, wastelands, and assorted harrowing hazards--and trap his hapless former friends inside it? Stripped of their magic powers, the would-be wizards must brave terrifying dangers, technical glitches, and one another's company if they want to see Medieval England--and their favorite sci-fi movies on VHS--ever again. Can our heroes survive this magical mystery torture? Or will it only lead them and their pointy hats into more peril?

Book Running with Scissors

Download or read book Running with Scissors written by Augusten Burroughs and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling memoir from Augusten Burroughs, Running with Scissors, now a Major Motion Picture! Running with Scissors is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her psychiatrist, a dead-ringer for Santa and a lunatic in the bargain. Suddenly, at age twelve, Augusten Burroughs found himself living in a dilapidated Victorian in perfect squalor. The doctor's bizarre family, a few patients, and a pedophile living in the backyard shed completed the tableau. Here, there were no rules, there was no school. The Christmas tree stayed up until summer, and Valium was eaten like Pez. And when things got dull, there was always the vintage electroshock therapy machine under the stairs.... Running with Scissors is at turns foul and harrowing, compelling and maniacally funny. But above all, it chronicles an ordinary boy's survival under the most extraordinary circumstances.

Book The Crystal Ribbon

Download or read book The Crystal Ribbon written by Celeste Lim and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonder, mysticism, heartache, and joy are the stones that set the path to one girl's journey as her destiny unfolds. In the village of Huanan, in medieval China, the deity that rules is the Great Huli Jing. Though twelve-year-old Li Jing's name is a different character entirely from the Huli Jing, the sound is close enough to provide constant teasing-but maybe is also a source of greater destiny and power. Jing's life isn't easy. Her father is a poor tea farmer, and her family has come to the conclusion that in order for everyone to survive, Jing must be sacrificed for the common good. She is sold as a bride to the Koh family, where she will be the wife and nursemaid to their three-year-old son, Ju'nan. It's not fair, and Jing feels this bitterly, especially when she is treated poorly by the Koh's, and sold yet again into a worse situation that leads Jing to believe her only option is to run away, and find home again. With the help of a spider who weaves Jing a means to escape, and a nightingale who helps her find her way, Jing embarks on a quest back to Huanan--and to herself.

Book Clever Maids Fearless Jacks and a Cat

Download or read book Clever Maids Fearless Jacks and a Cat written by Anita Best and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clever Maids, Fearless Jacks, and a Cat showcases the stories of two Newfoundland storytellers, Philip Pius Power and Alice Lannon. Ethnopoetic transcriptions of these sensitive and artful tales, which have been passed on orally for generations as part of a community tradition, give accounts of living oral performances from the last quarter of the twentieth century and demonstrate the artistry that is possible without the written word. Here, eight tales from Power and five tales from Lannon take up issues of vital concern—such as spousal abuse, bullying, and social and generational conflict—allusively, through a screen of fiction. In commentary following the stories Anita Best, Martin Lovelace, and Pauline Greenhill discuss the transmission of fairy tales in oral tradition, address the relation of these magic tales to Lannon’s and Power’s other stories, and share specifics about Newfoundland storytelling and the two tellers themselves. The text is further enriched by expressive illustrations from artist Graham Blair. Clever Maids, Fearless Jacks, and a Cat presents the fairy-tale oeuvres of two superb storytellers as a contribution to interdisciplinary fairy-tale studies and folklore—countering fairy-tale studies’ focus on written traditions and printed texts—as well as to gender studies, cultural studies, Newfoundland studies, and Canadian studies. Students, scholars, and general readers interested in folk and fairy tales, contemporary Märchen, Newfoundland folklore, or oral tradition more generally will find much of value in these pages. Support for this publication was provided, in part, by the University of Winnipeg.
