Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen's Answer: To the Letter From the King to His People No! I cannot, upon reflection, bring myself to use the name of her majesty in this way. A pamphlet has been pub lished, entitled A letter from the king to his people. It bears date from Carlton Palace. It has the King's arms at the head of it. 'it is signed george. The writer addresses the people as his subjects. In short, the thing is sent forth with all the circumstances calculated to induce us to believe, that the King is the real writer; and, then, at the close, it is declared, that it is a literary fiction, put forth with the most loyal intentions. When I first heard of and hadjust seen, this fiction, I conceived the design to give it answer in the some form; but, when I came to read the thing, I found it so horrible a performance, that I could not bring myself to put the design in execution. However, as the pam phlet contains what the enemies of the queen appear to think the King's case; and as it purports to be a true history of this family quarrel, I think it right to notice all the parts of it, on which common sense and common decency can suffer them selves to dwell for a moment; for a great deal of it is so very foolish, so glaringly absurd, as well as so foul, as to set all commentary at defiance; and indeed, it seems impossible. Book Letters of Queen Elizabeth and King James Vi Of Scotland

Download or read book Letters of Queen Elizabeth and King James Vi Of Scotland written by John Bruce and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Queen Elizabeth and King James Vi; Of Scotland: Some of Them Printed From Originals in the Possession of the Rev. Edward Ryder, and Others From a Ms. Which Formerly Belonged to Sir Peter Thompson, Kt The letters printed in the present volume have been derived from two sources. Forty-three of them have been communicated to the Camden Society by the rev. Edward Ryder, rector of Oaksey, in the county of Wilts: and the remaining fifty-two have been printed from a volume of transcripts formerly in the library of sir Peter Thompson, and now the property of the Camden Society by purchase from James Orchard Halliwell, esq. Of the letters for which we are indebted to Mr. Ryder, thirty-two are originals written wholly by the hand of queen Elizabeth; six are originals of an official character written by a secretary but signed by queen Elizabeth; two are contemporary copies of letters of king James, and two are drafts or copies in his majesty's handwriting. In what manner so large a collection of royal letters found their way into the possession of Mr. Ryder is partly accounted for as follows: At the period to which these letters relate it was the custom for royal secretaries, and also for many other public functionaries, to treat as their own all papers relating to that portion of the public business which they were officially called upon to transact. Book Letter to the Queen

Download or read book Letter to the Queen written by Samuel Warren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter to the Queen: On a Late Court Martial IN venturing to address this letter to Her Most Gracious Majesty, and laying it, at the same time, before the public, the author trusts that he will have credit for being actuated by a disinterested desire to promote the cause of truth and justice, and the public welfare. He is, indeed, impelled by no other motive whatever. Captain Douglas, equally with all persons concerned in the proceedings which have ended so disastrously for him, was a total stranger to the author, even in name, up to the month of March last, when he was summoned, in his professional capacity, to Guernsey. From the moment of his quitting that island, early in April, no other relation has existed between that gentleman and himself, than such as springs up between two fellow-citizens, one of whom believes the other a victim of injustice - This letter, which is published solely of its author's own accord, and at his expense alone, appears not only to him, but to some of the most eminent lawyers in the kingdom, to whom it has been submitted for dispassionate examination, to disclose an almost unparalleled series of substantial errors in the conduct of professedly legal proceeolmgs. Book Love Letters of Kings and Queens

Download or read book Love Letters of Kings and Queens written by Daniel Smith and published by Greenfinch. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tender, moving, heartfelt and warm (and sporadically scandalous and outrageous too), these are the private messages between people in love. Yet they are also correspondence between the rulers of nations. From Henry VIII's lovelorn notes to Anne Boleyn and George IV's impassioned notes to his secret wife, to Queen Victoria's tender letters to Prince Albert and Edward VIII's extraordinary correspondence with Wallis Simpson - these letters depict romantic love from its budding passion to the comfort and understanding of a long union (and occasionally beyond to resentment and recrimination), all set against the background of great affairs of state, wars and the strictures of royal duty. Here is a chance to glimpse behind the pomp and ceremony, the carefully curated images of royal splendour and decorum, to see the passions, hopes, jealousies and loneliness of kings and queens throughout history. By turns tender, moving, heartfelt and warm (and sporadically scandalous and outrageous too), these are the private messages between people in love. Yet they are also correspondence between the rulers of nations, whose actions (and passions) changed the course of history, for good and bad. This morning I received your dear, dear letter of the 21st. How happy do you make me with your love! Oh! my Angel Albert, I am quite enchanted with it! I do not deserve such love! Never, never did I think I could be loved so much. Queen Victoria to Prince Albert (28 November 1839)
