Book The Queen of Karmania Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Queen of Karmania Classic Reprint written by Marie Van Vorst and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen of Karmania He was riding slowly home; going back to a lonely house, to as much a home as a man can make without a woman. He could see the red roof of his own bungalow glowing out above the pepper trees, and below him as he rode the land was a riot of color, luxuriance and beauty. Bareheaded, his reins wound round his wrist, his hands in the pockets of his loose coat, he rode slowly, the light of the sunset glowing on his face and in his eyes. His mare, with head hung down, picked her way softly along the trail. Everything about the ranchman, from the light touch of his foot in the stirrup to the bare dark head and smiling mouth, his agreeable eyes and relaxed body, spoke contentment with life. He reflected the spirit and the joy of living. The foothills, purple, pink and blue, sweeping up to the heights, crimsoned and paled, and as he rode, Stephen Crossdale left behind him the fragrant forests of live oaks and the tall dark pines. The sage brush seemed painted by the brushes of the sunset and made a brilliant corridor for him to follow along the homeward trail. There would be nothing novel to greet him down there in his red-roofed bungalow, with the bougainvillaea vine staining its walls like blood. As no two travellers spell Persian and Turcoman names alike, I trust to be excused if verbal differences have anywhere escaped my notice. Finally, I must not omit to express my thanks to my wife, without whose affectionate assistance this work could scarcely have been written. Book The Queen s Heart Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Queen s Heart Classic Reprint written by J. H. Hildreth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen's Heart The light breeze out of the southwest had died away altogether as the sun came down towards the edge of the sea, and the broad sails of the Fleur de Lys flapped lazily as she rose slowly and sank again on the long oily swell. The pennant of the Baltimore Yacht Club at the peak curled a little now and then in an aimless sort of way as the masts swayed ever so slightly, but otherwise there was no sign of even a breath of air. It was still and it was also hot. The dead air stagnated over the dead sea and the red sun seemed to send reverberations of dead heat out across its path of beaten and glowing copper that seemed riveted on the slow curves of the sea. A long youth slouching in a low wicker deckchair, feebly clicked the ice in a tall glass and whined peevishly: "Jack, Jack! I say, you know, I really can't stand this sort of thing indefinitely." Jack Northrop tamped his pipe with a brown finger and chuckled grimly, "Oh, yes you can, my son, because you have to: and the worst is yet to come." He glanced along the sea with a shrewd eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen of Hearts, Vol. 3 of 3 Among other wonderful places, we visited Paris, Genoa, 'venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples, staying in some of those cities for months together. The fame of my mistress's riches followed her wherever she went; and there were plenty of gentlemen, foreigners as well as Englishmen, who were anxious enough to get into her good graces and to prevail on her to marry them. Nobody succeeded, how ever, in producing any very strong or lasting impression on her; and when we came back to England, after more than two years of absence, Mrs. Norcross was Still a widow, and showed no signs of wanting to change her condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sarchedon: A Legend of the Great Queen Dying in the desert - stretched, limp and helpless, in the darkening waste - poured out like water on the tawny sand two specks poised high above him in the deeper orange of the upper sky - a wide-winged vulture hovering and wheeling between the stricken lion and the setting sun. Dying in the desert - grim, dignified, unyielding, like a monarch slain in battle. So formidable in the morning - the herdsman's terror, the archer's dread, the savage wrestler in whose grasp horse and rider went down crushed, mangled, overmatched, like sucking fawn and unweaned child - fierce, tameless, unconquered - a noble adversary for the noblest champions of the plain - but ere the last red streak of evening faded on the dusky level of their wilderness, a thing for the foul night-bird to tear and buffet - for the wild-ass, wincing and snorting, half in terror, half in scorn, to spurn and trample with her hoof. Pitiful in its hopelessness, the wistful pleading of eyes gradually waning to the apathy of death; pitiful the long, flickering tongue, licking with something of a dog's homely patience that fatal gash of which the pain grew every moment more endurable, only because it was a death-wound; and pitiful too the utter prostration of those massive limbs, with knotted muscles and corded sinews - of that long, lean, tapering body - the very emblem of agile strength - which, striving in agony to rear but half its height, sank down again in dust, writhing, powerless, like an earthworm beneath the spade. No yell, no moan - only a short quick breathing, a convulsive shiver, and the occasional effort to rise, that time by time soaked and stained his lair with darker jets of blood. So those specks on the upper sky widened into two huge, soaring vultures, while the wing of a third brushed lightly against the fallen lion's mane, as the foul bird ventured nearer its coming banquet, croaking hideous invitations to others and yet others, that emerged, as if by magic, from the solemn, cloudless heaven. Far back into the desert, varied here and there by clammy clotted spots, lay a single track of footprints, closer together, less sharp, round, and clearly defined, as they dragged toward the end. Many a weary furlong had he travelled, the king of beasts, on his journey here to die; and yet he never was to reach the patch of arid reeds that instinct bade him seek for a last shelter - the scanty covert wherewith Nature prompted him to shield his death-agony from the remorseless bird of prey. It is a royal sport to-day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
