"What's in a name? that which we call a rose, Under another name," &c. Y a person of ordinary experience Shakespeare's immortal question is easily answered; but in my simple mind it causes as much thought and perplexity as one embodying the most profound philosophy. For had our shoulders not been burthened with that heavy human incubus, an old family Name, we could have taken the goods the gods provided and been happy. It was our Name, and our Name only, which caused consternation in our family, and constantly interfered with our enjoyment of the pleasures of the world. "O'Mara" does not sound very tremendous, not at all calculated to cause a moral earthquake or a social revolution. I had no honour to support. The good deeds of my forefathers--if they ever did any!--were effectually concealed from the light, and I was allowed to enjoy my life in peace. The only pretension to greatness which I could possibly have was my cousinship to the O'Maras, and this link was so slight as to have little effect upon my character. Kathleen was of a different mould, and born in a different sphere. Her name was her Fetish, as it were; she prized it beyond the common riches of this mortal life, she revered it, honoured it, lived for it, hugged it and kissed it....
