Book Touching Architecture

Download or read book Touching Architecture written by Anthony Brand and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about perception, emotion, and affect in architecture: how and why we feel the way that we do and the ways in which our surroundings and bodies contribute to this. Our experience of architecture is an embodied one, with all our senses acting in concert as we move through time and space. The book picks up where much of the critique of architectural aestheticism at the end of the twentieth century left off: illustrating the limitations and potential consequences of attending to architecture as the visually biased practice which has steadily become the status quo within both industry and education. It draws upon interdisciplinary research to elucidate the reasons why this is counter-productive to the creation of meaningful places and to articulate the embodied richness of our touching encounters. A "felt-phenomenology" is introduced as a more-than visual alternative capable of sustaining our physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. By recognising the reciprocal and participatory relationship that exists between atmospheric affect and our (phenomenological) bodies, we begin to appreciate the manifold ways in which we touch, and are touched, by our built environment. As such, Touching Architecture will appeal to those with an interest in architectural history and theory as well as those interested in the topic of atmospheres, affect, and embodied perception.

Book Sculpture and Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Sculpture and Psychoanalysis written by Brandon Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just what do psychoanalysis and modern sculpture have to do with one another? The present collection of essays, unique in its field, shows how key metaphors of Freudian and Kleinian psychoanalysis - splitting, projection, sublimation, identification, the schizoid and reparative mechanisms - as well as Lacan's concepts of the stade du mirroir and the objet petit a, can be fruitfully applied to a range of modern three-dimensional art, from Surrealism to the present day. As these essays show, figures such as Barbara Hepworth, Eva Hesse, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Robert Morris, Donald Judd, Gilbert and George, Rebecca Horn and others have often approached the material of sculpture with something like these mechanisms in mind. The need to unlock the levels of psychoanalytic connection between artist, object and viewer in recent debate has fuelled the diverse proposals of this original and important book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Andrea Palladio's works - the Basilica, Palazzo Chiericati, and Villa Rotonda in Vicenza; Villa Cornaro in Piombino Dese; the Redentore Church in Venice; and numerous other buildings - have never ceased to attract the attention of architects, historians, and the general public. Arguably the most influential Renaissance architect, Palladio and his works have been examined in countless publications. In this book, Branko Mitrovic rethinks traditionally held views of Palladio's design theory. He explores Palladio's approach to spatial composition, facade design, detailing, proportions, and use of the classical orders; discusses Platonist influences in Palladio's design; and uncovers pertinent aspects of Palladio's design procedures and methodology. Mitrovic provides a synthesis of earlier Palladian scholarship and emphasizes the importance of the history of design theory to the understanding of the architectural works of the part. Finally, he offers an insightful view of the application of Palladio's Renaissance design principles in twenty-first-century architecture, inspiring, through Palladianism, the architecture of the future." "Nearly 200 photographs and illustrations show-case a broad selection of Palladian structures and styles, supplemented by digital renderings, views, and site plans. Throughout, Mitrovic's comprehensive study reveals what architectural historians, practicing architects, and students can learn from Palladio today."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a thousand days in the early 1970s, Chileans experienced revolution not as a dream but as daily life. Alongside Salvador Allende’s attempt to democratically bring about a socialist regime, new understandings of the meaning of revolutionary change emerged. In her groundbreaking book Beyond the Vanguard, Marian E. Schlotterbeck explores popular politics in Chile in the decade before Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship and provides an in-depth account of how working-class people transformed the existing social order by embracing radical politics. Schlotterbeck eloquently examines the lost opportunities for creating a democratic revolution and the ways that the legacy of this period continues to resonate in Chile and beyond. Book Transnational Activism and National Movements in Latin America

Download or read book Transnational Activism and National Movements in Latin America written by Eduardo Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, as widespread perception spread of declining state sovereignty, activists and social movement organizations began to form transnational networks and coalitions to pressure both intergovernmental organizations and national governments on a variety of issues. Research has focused on the formation of these transnational networks, campaigns, and coalitions; their objectives, strategies and tactics; and their impact. Yet the issue of how participation in transnational networks influences national level mobilization has been little analyzed. What effects has the experience of social movement organizations at the transnational scale had for the development at the national scale? This volume addresses this significant gap in the literature on transnational collective action by building on approaches that stress the multi-level characteristics of transnational relations. Edited by noted Latin American politics scholar Eduardo Silva, the contributions focus on four distinct themes to which the empirical chapters contribute: Building a Transnational Relations Approach to Multi-Level Interaction; Transnational Relations and Left Governments; North-South and South-South Linkages; and The "Normalization" of Labor. Bridging the Divide will add considerably to empirical knowledge of the ways in which transnational and national factors dynamically interact in Latin America. Additionally, the mid-range theorizing of the empirical chapters, along with the mix of positive and negative cases, raises new hypotheses and questions for further study.

Book El Hierro Island

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pablo J. González
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-08-28
  • ISBN : 3031351355
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book El Hierro Island written by Pablo J. González and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth review of El Hierro Island, the youngest and most southwesterly volcano of the Canary Islands. In October 2011, a submarine eruption started offshore El Hierro Island. The 2011–2012 El Hierro eruption has probably been the best monitored and studied submarine eruption to date and has sparked interest in the study of this young ocean island volcano. During the last decade, multidisciplinary investigations, e.g., on the geological and volcanological character of its past and latest onshore and offshore eruptions, the geophysical and geochemical signatures of its magmatic plumbing system structure and dynamics, as well as the bio-geophysical interactions and consequences of submarine eruptions in the ocean, have been conducted. This book provides an authoritative review of many of these scientific advances as well as multiple remaining unknowns for the study of El Hierro Island and its 2011–2012 submarine eruption. Such knowledge should be of great interest to specialists not only in the Canary Islands volcanism but also in similar ocean island intraplate volcanoes.
