Book excerpt: This monograph studies a series of mathematical models of the evolution of a population under mutation and selection. Its starting point is the quasispecies equation, a general non-linear equation which describes the mutation-selection equilibrium in Manfred Eigen’s famous quasispecies model. A detailed analysis of this equation is given under the assumptions of finite genotype space, sharp peak landscape, and class-dependent fitness landscapes. Different probabilistic representation formulae are derived for its solution, involving classical combinatorial quantities like Stirling and Euler numbers. It is shown how quasispecies and error threshold phenomena emerge in finite population models, and full mathematical proofs are provided in the case of the Wright–Fisher model. Along the way, exact formulas are obtained for the quasispecies distribution in the long chain regime, on the sharp peak landscape and on class-dependent fitness landscapes. Finally, several other classical population models are analyzed, with a focus on their dynamical behavior and their links to the quasispecies equation. This book will be of interest to mathematicians and theoretical ecologists/biologists working with finite population models.

Book excerpt: The text of this monograph represents the author's lecture notes from a course taught in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in the Spring of 1977. On account of its origin as lecture notes, some sections of the text are telegraphic in style while other portions are overly detailed. This stylistic foible has not been modified as it does not appear to detract seriously from the readability and it does help to indicate which topics were stressed. The audience for the course at Stony Brook was composed almost entirely of fourth year undergraduates majoring in the mathematical sciences. All of these students had studied at least four semesters of calculus and one of probability; few had any prior experience with either differential equations or ecology. It seems prudent to point out that the author's background is in engineering and applied mathematics and not in the biological sciences. It is hoped that this is not painfully obvious. -vii- The focus of the monograph is on the formulation and solution of mathematical models; it makes no pretense of being a text in ecology. The idea of a population is employed mainly as a pedagogic tool, providing unity and intuitive appeal to the varied mathematical ideas introduced. If the biological setting is stripped away, what remains can be interpreted as topics on the qualitative behavior of differential and difference equations.

Considering periodic carrying capacity and periodic inherent growth rate, a population with seasonal changing life cycle and environment is reflected. The so-called periodically forced Beverton-Holt equation is investigated and its unique periodic solution is derived. This provides the first Cushing-Henson conjecture, while a counterexample proves that the classical second Cushing-Henson conjecture is not satisfied. Modifications of the conjecture are formulated. To extend the studies, the Beverton-Holt equation is investigated in the quantum calculus time setting. The existence of the globally attracting periodic solution of the Beverton-Holt q-difference equation is derived and modified versions of the second Cushing-Henson conjecture are presented. To include ecological aims in the population model, the exploitation of a single population is discussed. Instead of the classical approach of variational calculus, a novel technique is applied to obtain the maximum sustainable yield of a harvested single population with logistic growth. This powerful tool serves as a foundation for the analysis of the exploitation of the discrete population model. The Beverton-Holt population model including harvesting is defined and its unique periodic solution derived. The goal is to optimize the annual-sustainable yield with respect to the harvest effort. Logistic differential equations not only appear in context of single population models but also in epidemiology. One of the basic epidemic models introduced by Kermack and McKendrick in 1927 is the SIS model, Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible model. This system of logistic differential equations describes the spread of infectious diseases.
