Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion Reactor Design Provides a detailed overview of fusion reactor design, written by an international leader in the field Nuclear fusion—generating four times as much energy from the same mass of fuel as nuclear fission—is regarded by its proponents as a viable, eco-friendly alternative to gas-fired, coal-fired, and conventional power plants. Although the physics of nuclear fusion is essentially understood, the construction of prototype reactors currently presents significant technical challenges. Fusion Reactor Design: Plasma Physics, Fuel Cycle System, Operation and Maintenance provides a systematic, reader-friendly introduction to the characteristics, components, and critical systems of fusion reactors. Focusing on the experimental Tokamak reactor, this up-to-date resource covers relevant plasma physics, necessary technology, analysis methods, and the other aspects of fusion reactors. In-depth chapters include derivations of key formulas, figures highlighting physical and structural characteristics of fusion reactors, illustrative numerical calculations, practical design examples, and more. Designed to help researchers and engineers understand and overcome the technological difficulties in making fusion power a reality, this volume: Provides in-depth knowledge on controlled thermonuclear fusion and its large-scale application in both current fusion reactors and future test reactors Covers plasma analysis, plasma equilibrium and stability, and plasma transport and confinement, and safety considerations Explains each component of fusion reactors, including divertors, superconducting coils, plasma heating and current drive systems, and vacuum vessels Discusses safety aspects of fusion reactors as well as computational approaches to safety aspects of fusion reactors Fusion Reactor Design: Plasma Physics, Fuel Cycle System, Operation and Maintenance is required reading for undergraduate and graduate students studying plasma physics and fusion reactor technology, and an important reference for nuclear physicists, nuclear reactor manufacturers, and power engineers involved in fusion reactor research and advanced technology development.

  • Author : C Wendell Horton, Jr
  • Publisher : World Scientific

Download or read book Iter Physics written by C Wendell Horton, Jr and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of a vast and clean source of thermal power drove physics research for over fifty years and has finally come to collimation with the international consortium led by the European Union and Japan, with an agreement from seven countries to build a definitive test of fusion power in ITER. It happened because scientists since the Manhattan project have envisioned controlled nuclear fusion in obtaining energy with no carbon dioxide emissions and no toxic nuclear waste products. This large toroidal magnetic confinement ITER machine is described from confinement process to advanced physics of plasma-wall interactions, where pulses erupt from core plasma blistering the machine walls. Emissions from the walls reduce the core temperature which must remain ten times hotter than the 15 million degree core solar temperature to maintain ITER fusion power. The huge temperature gradient from core to wall that drives intense plasma turbulence is described in detail. Also explained are the methods designed to limit the growth of small magnetic islands, the growth of edge localized plasma plumes and the solid state physics limits of the stainless steel walls of the confinement vessel from the burning plasma. Designs of the wall coatings and the special 'exhaust pipe' for spent hot plasma are provided in two chapters. And the issues associated with high-energy neutrons — about 10 times higher than in fission reactions — and how they are managed in ITER, are detailed.

Book Reactor Physics Calculations For Applications In Nuclear Technology Proceedings Of The Workshop

Download or read book Reactor Physics Calculations For Applications In Nuclear Technology Proceedings Of The Workshop written by Dermott E Cullen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-01-30 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop was designed to meet the needs of those currently involved in or are planning a nuclear programme involving research and/or power fission reactors. The workshop had a broad scope including not only fission reactor core calculations, but also safety, fuel management, waste disposal reactor licensing. The lectures and computer exercises covered almost all aspects of the operation of fission reactors. This workshop introduced participants to the methods currently used in fission reactor calculations and to some computer codes in which these methods are used.

Book Diagnostics Development on the Route Towards Fusion Reactors

Download or read book Diagnostics Development on the Route Towards Fusion Reactors written by Didier Mazon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermonuclear fusion could offer a feasible and sustainable solution to future energy production needs. In this book, internationally prominent experts present lectures on their experiences with fusion reactors, sharing comprehensive information on diagnostic methods and how to interpret the results obtained with different methods. The lecturers focus on diagnostic developments for a tokamak demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO) and for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), which will face unprecedented challenges: as it uses tritium to fuel the reaction, it also produces extremely high temperatures, high-energy neutron flux and intense gamma radiation. The lectures cover a diverse range of topics, including magnetic fusion confinement (tokamak, stellerators), Inertial Confinement Fusion lasers, and plasma physics, with a particular focus on measurement applications and associated physics in connection with ITER and DEMO. They describe current developments in theory and experiments, while also discussing the fundamentals of this fusion reactor technology field. As such, the lectures offer a valuable resource for all students and researchers who are new to the field.
