Download or read book The Quality of Successors and Leadership Style of Chinese Family Businesses written by Puying Li and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Family Businesses (CFBs) have experienced rapid development over the last twenty years. After the Reform and Opening proposed and enacted by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping from 1978 on-wards, many Chinese began to establish their own companies. Nowadays, these enterprisers of CFBs are facing the dilemma of choosing new successors for when they retire. Therefore, the quality of the successors is obviously a key consideration for the future development of CFBs.The focus of this research has been on understanding transformational leadership and Chinese traditional leadership - guanxi leadership and paternalistic leadership, in order to explore what quality of successors is suitable for CFBs further development. The research used the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA); this methodology required the author to interview enterprisers of CFBs. All five interviewees shared their leadership experience, guanxi leadership, paternalistic leadership, transformational leadership and female leadership with the author. Their rich leadership experience facilitated the author's analysis of the usefulness of traditional leadership for CFBs, and the factors affecting succession issues for CFBs.

Book Chinese Family Business and the Equal Inheritance System

Download or read book Chinese Family Business and the Equal Inheritance System written by Victor Zheng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book disputes the traditional argument that the equal inheritance system hinders the growth of Chinese family business, approaching this not only in terms of economic capital, but also in terms of human capital such as education and leadership, and social networks. Zheng argues that most of the family business patriarchs only focus on the passing on economic capital, but give little attention to human capital and social capital when the come to the stage to transfer control to the next level. It further elaborates that the equal inheritance system itself isn’t the destructive force that weakens family business competitiveness, but can assist economic development by generating dynamism and capital. Based on extensive primary research, the work discusses how equal division encourages sibling comparison, analysing how such comparisons initially generate stress and anxiety but will ultimately galvanize competition, benefiting the business. The author also assesses how family division can offer initial economic human and social capitals that can motivate siblings to start their own businesses and be free from the subjugation sometimes associated with a family firm. Through the evaluation of these issues the book argues that the equal inheritance system can be regarded as the origin of the self-employment mentality, which not only fosters the growth of Chinese family business by plays crucial role in promoting economic development. Providing a valuable contribution to the field, this work will be of great interest to all scholars of Chinese and Asian business.

Book Developing Leaders Within Family Businesses

Download or read book Developing Leaders Within Family Businesses written by John James Cater and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family business studies can benefit from research attention focused on successors. Researchers have proposed that founder leadership has an overshadowing affect on subsequent generations in the family business and is central to the formation of organizational culture. However, in the case of the succeeding generation, there is a lack of research or even speculation concerning the style of leadership employed by the successor. The issue of successor leadership is complex because this individual may not have the same motivation for entering the business as the founder before him. I propose that this individual enters the family business to sustain the firm or perhaps to grow the firm, more as a manager than as an entrepreneur. This study makes two contributions to the family business literature. First, it explicitly incorporates leadership theory more fully into the context of family business. Second, it fills a gap that exists in the family business literature created by a focus on the leadership style of the founder to the exclusion of the leadership style of subsequent generations. This book is directed toward family business researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders.

Book It s Not the how Or the what But the who

Download or read book It s Not the how Or the what But the who written by Claudio Fernandez Araoz and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Succeed by mastering the art of the who Why surround yourself with the best? Because it matters--in all aspects of life. In fact, in professional environments, getting people right--what global leadership authority Claudio Fernáaacute;ndez-Aráoz calls "the art of great 'who' decisions"--marks the difference between success and failure. To thrive, you need to identify those with the highest potential, get them in your corner and on your team, and help them grow. Yet surprisingly very few of us are able to meet that challenge. This series of short and engaging essays outlines the obstacles to great "who" decisions and offers solutions to address them in a systematic way. Drawing from several decades of experience in global executive search and talent development, as well as the latest management and psychology research, Fernández-Aráoz offers wisdom and practical advice to improve the choices we make about employees and mentors, business partners and friends, top corporate leaders and even elected officials. The personal stories and cutting-edge studies described in the book will help you understand both your own failings and the external forces commonly at play in staffing decisions. The author shares concrete recommendations on how to select the best people, bring out their strengths, foster collective greatness in the groups you've assembled, and create not only better organizations but also a better society. Starting with the cases of Amazon pioneer Jeff Bezos and Brazilian tycoon Roger Agnelli and continuing with individual and corporate examples from around the world, Fernández-Aráoz paints a vivid picture of what great "who" decisions look like and presents a fresh and commanding argument about why they matter more than ever today.

China has a strong historical legacy, devoted to patriarchal values and strong family-centered traditions. This volume discusses the current status, upcoming challenges, and future prospects for family businesses in China. This book offers researchers a comprehensive overview of small family firms that are likely to be home-based microenterprises as well as large publicly traded business groups that are frequently owned by business families.
