Book excerpt: The Latino population, the largest ethnic minority in the United States, is a diverse group originating from numerous geographic regions of Latin America. Latinos vary in the risk for type 2 diabetes, a condition that exacts a costly burden on those who suffer with it. With the Latino population diversity, diverse strategies are needed. One strategy is to improve outcomes of life quality by improving knowledge of those who deliver health services to Latinos with type 2 diabetes. Through measurement of quality of life (QOL), the more precious aspects of living, how one feels about living with diabetes, can be measured. This information may serve to not only predict outcomes, but inform providers of the needs and perceptions of their patients. The current study uses the Audit for Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL), a diabetes-specific quality of life instrument. ADDQoL baseline questionnaires from 297 Latinos with type 2 diabetes provided the secondary data for this descriptive, comparative study. The study examined differences in QOL across immigrants to the United States from four geographic regions of Latin America. Results of the study suggest there are significant differences in diabetes-related quality of life across the regions. Additionally, principal component analysis was used to identify sub-domains of the ADDQoL to identify the physical, social, and psychological well-being of subjects. The sub-domains were then analyzed for their predictive ability on the overall quality of life of the Latino subjects with type 2 diabetes. Physical functioning and social well-being were the only significant predictors of life quality in Latinos with type 2 diabetes using the ADDQoL. The study findings are useful to raise awareness of the unique differences and commonalities of Latinos as educators and providers work with the population. Further research is needed to examine the sub-domains of the ADDQoL, especially the psychological well-being, other influences such as education or co-morbidities on quality of life, and other biological markers such as the HbA1c and quality of life.

Book excerpt: Though the concept of "Latino" is something that in today's society is assumed to be a given category, it is necessary to examine how and why people from distinct ethnic groups embraced a panethnic Latino identity. This dissertation challenges the conventional knowledge on panethnic identity formation. Previous scholarship situates Latino identity as political in nature and a result of 1960s and 1970s activism. My research on Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in Grand Rapids, Michigan from the 1920s to the 1970s, shows that panethnicity is not only rooted in Spanish-speaking people's relationship with and to the state, but rather also emerges from individuals' desire for human connection. Their familiarity with religion, cultural practices, and shared language helped Mexicans and Puerto Ricans ward off loneliness in their new surrounding. Also, panethnic community and Latino identity formation emerged in Grand Rapids in the 1950s, well before other works suggest. Though there was occasionally tension between some Mexicans and Puerto Ricans, many established affective and kinship bonds through interactions in the Catholic Church, on baseball fields, at dances, and even more when they intermarried. Their decades of social and cultural interaction and their shared experiences with discrimination, led this community in the late 1960s to create the Latin American Council and participate in the federal Model Cities program. This moment of unity was also marked by tension rooted in the complexity of Latino identity that rested on the varying intersections of ethnicity, class, and generation. While some community activists quarreled, others worked together within the Latin American Council to provide social services and cultural programming, greatly improving the quality of life in Grand Rapids. Other activists worked closely with African Americans to change the City of Grand Rapids' hiring requirements and to pursue community control over policing of Black and brown communities. As Latinos continue to grow in number and diversity, this dissertation serves as a model to understand how Latinos developed interethnic solidarities and intimate social relations that often served as the precursor to working towards collective goals.

Book excerpt: Michigan, like most of the states formed from the old Northwest, originated as a state of farmers, fishermen, and lumbermen and remained so until Detroit emerged as a major industrial center at the turn of the twentieth century. The growth of the automotive industry attracted new immigrants and new politics. Republican for most of its history, Michigan became a bipartisan state with political divisions: upper versus lower peninsula, agriculture versus industry, labor versus capital, developers versus ecologists, and conflicts between races. Lansing and its lobbyists and political action committees exemplify modern large-state politics. With double-digit unemployment and an enormous stake in cars, roads, and bridges, Michigan is acutely aware of its ties to the federal government. Two governors, G. Mennen Williams and George Romney, have contended for the presidency, and one representative, Gerald Ford, became president by legislative maneuver. A strong governorship, an independent and experienced bureaucracy, and a full-time legislature have created an activist, policy-directed state government that generally bears little resemblance to the laissez-faire leadership of Michigan's early years. Although this book provides much historical and geographical information, the primary focus remains Michigan's need to cope with its vacillating economy. The authors look at the state's regional, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic diversity and show how these are affected by the forces of change. William P. Browne is a professor of political science at Central Michigan University. He is author of Private Interests, Public Policy, and American Agriculture. Kenneth VerBurg is a professor in theDepartment of Resource Development at Michigan State University. He serves as chairperson of the State Boundary Commission and is coauthor with Charles Press of American Politicians and Journalists and coauthor of the award-winning Sacred Cows and Hot Potatoes: Agrarian Myths in Agriculture Policy.
