Book Quality Index Tables for Some Eastern Hardwood Species

Download or read book Quality Index Tables for Some Eastern Hardwood Species written by Joseph J. Mendel and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Ever since the quality-index (Q.I.) concept was introduced by A.M. Herrick in 1946, its importance as a measure of timber value has grown: and it has been used, not only in other research efforts, but also as a tool to be used by foresters and timber operators (Herrick 1946). We have recently employed the Q.I. concept in our rate-of-value-increase studies on nine tree species in the Northeast and recognized that, as a byproduct of this study, the log-quality indexes would be useful to timber operators. This paper briefly reviews the quality-index concept, presents log-quality index tables for a selected group of eastern hardwood tree species, and explains how timber operators can use Q.I. for evaluating the lumber that can be sawed from logs and trees. The Q.I. tables are based on two different lumber price reporting services and cover different geographic regions. Those species that occur in more than one region have a different Q.I. in each region. S3.

Book Adjusting Quality Index Log Values to Represent Local and Regional Commercial Sawlog Product Values

Download or read book Adjusting Quality Index Log Values to Represent Local and Regional Commercial Sawlog Product Values written by Orris D. McCauley and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The primary purpose of this paper is not only to report the results of a comparative analysis as to how well the Q.I. method predicts log product values when compared to commercial sawmill log output values, but also to develop a methodology which will facilitate the comparison and provide the adjustments needed by the sawmill operator. The commercial sawlog values as derived in an independent study of seven sawmills in southeastern Ohio and eastern Kentucky were compared with Q.I. values developed for an analysis of log and tree valuation. (Whittaker and McCauley 1966). Six different species were compared: red oak, black oak, scarlet oak, white oak, chestnut oak, and yellow-poplar.S3.

Book Tree Value Conversion Standards Revisited

Download or read book Tree Value Conversion Standards Revisited written by Paul S. DeBald and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated tree value conversion standards (TVCS) are presented for 12 major hardwood species of the central hardwood forest. TVCS measure a tree's worth in dollars based on the quantity and quality of its expected yield of 414 (I-inch) lumber. The updated standards-developed for each species by butt-log grade, merchantable height, and diameter at breast height-reflect the changes in lumber prices and in conversion costs which have occurred since 1976 when the original TVCS were published.

Book Investment Analyses of Stand Improvement and Reforestation Opportunities in Appalachian Forests

Download or read book Investment Analyses of Stand Improvement and Reforestation Opportunities in Appalachian Forests written by Owen W. Herrick and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In a study carried out on the George Washington National Forest, 72 of the existing 143 site-stand condition classes were designates as candidates for timber-stand-improvement or conversion projects. But which projects are worth undertaking, and which should receive priority? These are decisions that confront program administrators and forest managers alike. To help them in this we have made investment analyses of the 19 most prevalent (modal) project classes, which together encompass almost 124 thousand acres of this Forest in Virginia and West Virginia. By providing a basis for rating and comparing opportunities, these appraisals suggest what kinds of projects to favor in planning an efficient program for stand improvement and stand conversion.S3.
