The focus of attention is the dispute concerning human nature between John Taylor (1694-1761) of Norwich, England, a Christian educator and minister who was highly influenced by the humanistic principles of the Enlightenment, and Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) of Northampton, Massachusetts, Puritan pastor and author, known primarily for his spirited defense of Calvinistic principles. Taylor's chief work entitled The Scripture belief-doctrine of original sin, proposed to free and candid examination (1739-40), was a rigorous assault upon the Calvinistic notion of human nature as innately evil, to which Edwards responded with an equally rigorous defense of the doctrine in his treatise The great Christian doctrine of original sin defended (1758). Whereas this study analyzes the historical context of both works as well as their philosophical and theological arguments, emphasis is placed on the contribution of Johnathan Edwards. By focusing on the way in which Edwards responded to the new and decidedly optimistic view of human nature that made its way into eighteenth-century colonial New England, one may expand his understanding of both the encounter between Enlightenment and Puritan thought and the unique theory of Edwards himself. The traditional Calvinistic concept of human nature, specifically its doctrine of original sin, experienced a considerable loss of appeal in the period from the Restoration to the middle of the eighteenth century. Taylor's treatise (1739-40) is something of culmination to this development. A similar demise in the influence of Calvinistic principles occurred in the American colonies prior to the First Great Awakening. Edwards' treatise, a point-by-point refutation of Taylor's work, was an effort to halt the trend. Edwards' volume is analyzed and assessed in its entirety. His methodological approach for ascertaining the innate moral condition of human nature, his philosophical and religious arguments in defense of the Calvinistic doctrine of original sin, and his response to three fundamental objections relating to freedom of the will, the problem of evil, and the question of personal identity are thoroughly examined.
