Book The Puritan Experience

Download or read book The Puritan Experience written by Owen C. Watkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972 and based on extensive research and use of source materials including manuscripts, this book examines Puritan spiritual autobiographies written before 1725 and sets them in the context of the literary tradition out of which they grew. As well as Bunyan, Baxter and Fox, this book also discusses important works which have received less attention, notably the Confessions of Richard Norwood, the Bermudan settler. The book identifies 3 strands in the tradition: the work of the ‘orthodox’ Puritans; the prophets of the Commonwealth, and the confessions and journals of the early Quakers. The social, religious and literary factors which contributed to their development are discussed and it is shown how the self-analysis popularized by the Puritan preachers and writers contributed to the development of the novel. The book will be of particular value to those interested in 17th Century literature or religion.

Book Films You Saw in School

Download or read book Films You Saw in School written by Geoff Alexander and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of dollars in public funds were allocated to school districts in the post-Sputnik era for the purchase of educational films, resulting in thousands of 16mm films being made by exciting young filmmakers. This book discusses more than 1,000 such films, including many available to view today on the Internet. People ranging from adult film stars to noted physicists appeared in them, some notable directors made them, people died filming them, religious entities attempted to ban them, and even the companies that made them tried to censor them. Here, this remarkable body of work is classified into seven subject categories, within which some of the most effective and successful films are juxtaposed against those that were didactic and plodding treatments of similar thematic material. This book, which discusses specific academic classroom films and genres, is a companion volume to the author's Academic Films for the Classroom: A History (McFarland), which discusses the people and companies that made these films.

Book Reformation and Revival

Download or read book Reformation and Revival written by John Brown and published by Vision Forum. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1558, the death of Bloody Mary and the accession of Elizabeth I to England's throne offered new hope to thousands of exiled Protestants who returned to Britain en masse. Their aim -- to see Christ's Church purified. Reformation and Revival tells their story, chronicling the tragedies and triumphs that the Puritans experienced as they engaged the English Crown and the established Church on matters of Christian faith and practice. An excellent survey of the Puritan's struggle for religious liberty and impact on Western culture, Reformation and Revival offers readers a window into the Puritan world that gave us the likes of Bunyan, Baxter, Owen, and Cromwell on Britain's shores, as well as such leaders as Winthrop and the Mathers who established the great Puritan settlement in North America.

Download or read book The Puritan Revolution written by Stuart E. Prall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, the documents collected in this volume (all re-set for ease of reading), trace the history of the Puritan Revolution from its roots in the early seventeenth century to the Restoration. They show how the causes and the course of the upheaval were reflected immediately and polemically in the torrent of books, tracts and pamphlets, letters, speeches, sermons, petitions, paper constitutions and government instruments that accompanied and often precipitated events. The documents substantiate the conviction of many scholars that the English Revolution represented a shaking of society comparable to the French and Russian revolutions. The Introduction discusses the work of historians of modern-day historians of the period and contributes to the debate about the underlying causes of the crisis.

Book excerpt: These eight reports by white settlers held captive by Indians gripped the imagination not only of early settlers but also of American writers through our history. These both delineate the social and ideological struggle between the captors and the settlers, and constitute a dramatic rendition of the Puritans' spiritual struggle for redemption.
