Book The Purdys A Cattle Family History of the Purebred Beef Cattle Industry Through the Experience of One Family

Download or read book The Purdys A Cattle Family History of the Purebred Beef Cattle Industry Through the Experience of One Family written by James R. Males and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purdys: A Cattle FamilyThe story begins in 1887, when Grant Purdy began studying cattle pedigrees and purchased his first purebred Shorthorn cow and bull. It follows four generations and twelve members of the Purdy family with a love of purebred beef cattle. A close-knit family that lived within a few miles of each other and worked together on Purdy Brothers Shorthorns in northwest Missouri. The story describes the effect of the farm depression that eventually led to all the members of the family interested in purebred beef cattle leaving Missouri for other parts of the United States. They worked on "model farms", and were heavily involved in the growth of Polled Herefords in the mid-south and southeastern United States. Finally, it tells the story of the two members of the family who became college professors specializing in beef cattle and passing on the Purdy way. The people trained and advised by the members of the family include many of the most influential cattle people of the late 20th and early 21st century, including one President of the United States. The best-known member of the family was the most influential beef cattle judge of the late 20th century. This is the cattle story of the Purdys.

Book C C Slaughter

Download or read book C C Slaughter written by David J. Murrah and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born during the infant years of the Texas Republic, C. C. Slaughter (1837–1919) participated in the development of the southwestern cattle industry from its pioneer stages to the modern era. Trail driver, Texas Ranger, banker, philanthropist, and cattleman, he was one of America’s most famous ranchers. David J. Murrah’s biography of Slaughter, now available in paperback, still stands as the definitive account of this well-known figure in Southwest history. A pioneer in West Texas ranching, Slaughter increased his holdings from 1877 to 1905 to include more than half a million acres of land and 40,000 head of cattle. At one time “Slaughter country” stretched from a few miles north of Big Spring, Texas, northwestward two hundred miles to the New Mexico border west of Lubbock. His father, brothers, and sons rode the crest of his popularity, and the Slaughter name became a household word in the Southwest. In 1873—almost ten years before the “beef bonanza” on the open range made many Texas cattlemen rich—C. C. Slaughter was heralded by a Dallas newspaper as the “Cattle King of Texas.” Among the first of the West Texas cattlemen to make extensive use of barbed wire and windmills, Slaughter introduced new and improved cattle breeds to West Texas. In his later years, greatly influenced by Baptist minister George W. Truett of Dallas, Slaughter became a major contributor to the work of the Baptist church in Texas. He substantially supported Baylor University and was a cofounder of the Baptist Education Commission and Dallas’s Baylor Hospital. Slaughter also cofounded the Texas Cattle Raisers’ Association (1877) and the American National Bank of Dallas (1884), which through subsequent mergers became the First National Bank. His banking career made him one of Dallas’s leading citizens, and at times he owned vast holdings of downtown Dallas property.

Book Mexico as a Market for Purebred Beef Cattle From the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mexico as a Market for Purebred Beef Cattle From the United States Classic Reprint written by D. E. Salmon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico as a Market for Purebred Beef Cattle From the United States Something should be done to get the purebred stock of the United States before the Mexican ranchmen. It is impossible to take herds of bulls from one part of the State to the other to exhibit them. The railroad facilities are too limited, and it would be out of the question to drive them from place to place across the arid plains and mountains. It occurs to me that something might be done, perhaps under the patronage of Government, to establish an exhibition of purebred stock in Ciudad Juarez. From November to March the breeders could ship stock here where feeding would be comparatively cheap, since hay and grain delivered at El Paso or Juarez is at a nominal price. During the season I mention, the ranch men, many of them, visit the border, and more would come if such an exhibit existed to attract them. With an arrangement of this kind they could see the stock, could gain all the necessary information about it, and would. No doubt, when properly impressed, buy annually a sufficient number of bulls to give them a high class and heavy strain of range cattle. Book The Legacy of the Florida Pioneer Cow Hunters

Download or read book The Legacy of the Florida Pioneer Cow Hunters written by Nancy Dale and published by . This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Florida pioneer "cow hunters" gave birth to the cattle industry. Florida, discovered by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon in the 1500s, left behind cattle that roamed the peninsula hundreds of years. In the 1800s, new settlers gathered-up the "scrub cattle" and bred them with their herds. As cracker whips snapped, "cow hunters" rounded-up their herds and drove them by the thousands to coastal markets on the old "cracker trails." It was a dangerous passage. The legendary "cow hunters" are today's ranchers. This book is about the past and the future of ranching in Florida as a new generation takes over the reins with some heirs choosing another profession and selling the family ranch. I hope the reader will reflect upon the valuable lessons these ranchers reveal about history and survival.
