Book An Annotated Bibliography of Nineteenth century Grammars of English

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of Nineteenth century Grammars of English written by Manfred Görlach and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, education became accessible to much wider circles of society in a great number and variety of schools and the teaching of grammar came to be obligatory from 1870/72 with the advent of general education. Whereas these general trends of the 19th century are well-known to scholars working in different disciplines of social history, and the history of education in particular, it is still true that major sections of the evidence are largely uncollected. This is especially so for school books: there is virtually a gap between the 18th century and the present grammatical tradition. This bibliography lists some 1930 works on English grammar published in the 19th century, mainly in Britain and the US, half of which are accompanied by short descriptions of their physical make-up, content and affiliation.

Book E English Grammar Narration Only

Download or read book E English Grammar Narration Only written by Durga Prasad and published by Durga Prasad. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESCRIPTION - (Narration) Whosoever wants to learn English, he/she has to learn English Grammar. Grammar teaches how to read, write and speak English correctly. Grammar is divided into five important parts: 1. : Orthography 2. : Etymology 3. : Syntax 4. : Punctuation 5. : Prosody A learner of English Grammar is taught about alphabet 26 letters – Capital and Small letters separately – how to read , how to write and how to speak ( pronounce ) these letters nicely with ease. Then with the joining of one letter to another letter or letters they are taught how to form words step by step. Here also they are taught the method or art how to spell well these letters and how to learn nicely to read, write and speak these words with ease. At the third stage of teaching they are taught how to make sentence with the help of subject, verb, object and moreover with the complements, if any. For the students of senior classes they have to learn more about important chapters of Grammar so that they can be able to write the answers of long type questions, essays, letters etc. Over and above some grammar portions are also prescribed in the syllabus/prospectus. As these portions are very important ones and tough also, the students have to pay proper attention to the rules and learn them properly. These chapters are very important in English grammar: 1. : Kinds of sentence 2. : Parts Of Speech 3. : Tense 4. : Narration – Direct and Indirect Speech 5. : Transformation 6. : Analysis ( Clauses ) 7. : Synthesis 8. : Punctuation As an English teacher I have experienced that some of the students do not follow when they are taught Narration Chapter i.e. Direct and Indirect Speech and the rules or methods how to change correctly from direct speech or narration to indirect speech or narration. I am a retired person of nearly 70 years. My sons basically all software engineers working at distant places advised me to write good books for the students out of my long experience of teaching English and my grandson – a student of BCA of Asansol Engineering College, West Bengal (India) has consented to edit the e – books (Booklets) part by part with the least price and get them published in Google Play, Google Book, Flip kart, Amazon KDP and so on… The Booklet Narration has been written in a very simple language citing suitable examples one by one so that the students can be able to understand or grasp quickly with ease. Do hope with the publication of this type of booklet not only the students but many people who are desirous of learning English can be benefitted particularly they will have enough time/leisure while waiting for bus/train/flight and so on outside with a Smart Phone in their hands with internet connectivity. Book Handbook of the History of the English Language

Download or read book Handbook of the History of the English Language written by A. H. Keene and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION: THE History of the English Language, as distinct from that of its Literature, constitutes a separate division of the English department at the Civil Service and other Government examinations. An effort has been made in the following pages to throw into as small a space as possible all such matter as is needed to meet the requirements of that single head. Indeed the present work was actually suggested by, and has been wholly planned on, the very first question on the English language put to the candidates at the July examinations, 1858. However abstruse, however varied, or seemingly superfluous, the matter herein contained, it is but an answer, and that far from complete, to this remarkable question:— 'Give a distinct account of the constitution of the English language, in respect both of the vocabulary and of the grammar, at each of the following dates: in the tenth century, when it was still what is usually called Saxon or Anglo-Saxon by modern philologists' (see the whole of Sec. II.); 'in the twelfth' (Sec. III.); 'in the fourteenth' (Sec. V.); 'in the sixteenth and in the eighteenth' (Sec. VI.); 'noting carefully the difference between each stage of its progress, and the immediate preceding one, and assigning the cause or causes of the change.' But, while the whole book is thus occupied in dealing with this formidable query, it may have incidentally disposed of others less exacting in their nature, ex. gr. second:— 'Describe clearly and exactly the position and connection of the English language (regarded in its earliest known form, which is still its basis or mould), in what is called the Indo-European family of languages' (Sec I.); the fourth:— 'Compare the English language in its present state with any other, ancient or modern, with which you may be familiar, in general serviceableness and power as an instrument of expression' (Sec. VI., §97, 98); the fifth:— 'Illustrate by a few decisive examples the manner in which the English language adopts words from the French (Sec. V., § 72 ; VI., § 95), from the Latin (Sec. VI., § 97), and from the Greek (Sec. VI., § 99) languages respectively; and the nature of the changes, whether in the spelling, the pronunciation, or both, by which it assimilates them, and makes them its own.' But though the work has been planned and the subject matter selected with a view to meet the requirements of these examinations, its special object may not, perhaps, render it the less generally useful, having been so compiled as to form a practical introduction both to the history of English literature and to an exact knowledge of the science of English grammar. It may thus be found a valuable text-book to the more advanced pupils of our schools and colleges, without being altogether void of interest to the general reader. A knowledge of the steps by which the language has reached its present state seems needed to the right understanding of the true principles of English grammar. Changes like its for his, they for hi, loving for lovand, are intelligible only in the light of the past; and it may be truly said that if nearly all our grammars are avowedly meaningless, often positively injurious, it is because they treat the language either in conformity with a classic model or with a total disregard of its past history and Saxon origin.

Book An Elementary English Grammar and Composition for Use in Public Schools

Download or read book An Elementary English Grammar and Composition for Use in Public Schools written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary English Grammar and Composition, for Use in Public Schools In the treatment of Syntax, the book contains numerous examples of inaccuracies in English, selected with a view to test the knowledge and exercise the ingenuity of the pupil. This part of Grammar, partly from the defect in our text-books, has not received, hitherto, that prominence which its importance demands. As every pupil attending our Public Schools should have a fair mastery of English in writing, the elements of Composition have been introduced, and such suggestions given as will guide the teacher and aid the pupil. It will be observed that in Etymology every important definition is approached by an explanation This method has the advantage of fixing vividly and clearly on the mind of the pupil the statement of the definition. The language of a definition is no unintelligible jargon of sounds when once an explanation leading to it is clearly understood. Other minor points may be noticed: as the numerous examples which the book contains; the constant review required on the part of the pupil; the frequent repetition of leading principles; the fulness of the treatment of Syntax, and the practical method throughout the work. The work, it is believed, will be highly suitable for class instruction. With this statement, the author submits this work, trusting that the teachers of the Province will give it a fair trial in their classes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Topics in English Grammar: For the Pupil, the Teacher, and the General Reader In preparing this little book the only part of the work that was a task was the determining what not to omit. All teachers are agreed that a hand-book should be brief; but all are not agreed upon what are essentials and what are not. However, there has been no hesitation in excluding foreign matter, such as belongs to the province of rhetoric and etymology. So with the many subdivisions of the classes of words. It will be seen that the work is not a course of lan guage lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
