Book The Punters Guide to Democracy

Download or read book The Punters Guide to Democracy written by Peter Emerson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses multiple ways of voting in a democratic system and explains the basis of more consensual politics. Without delving into too much technical argument or too many mathematical examples, it aims to show that binary decision-making is blunt, primitive, divisive, and sometimes inaccurate; prove that other methodologies are more accurate and, therefore, more democratic; highlight more inclusive and effective voting procedures; discuss electoral reforms for national parliaments and international forums like the UN Security Council and COP26/27. The book is written not just for academia, or for the politicians and journalists, or for other specialists; it is for the general public: for students still at school, for voters in society at large, and for activists in umpteen NGOs. “...the West's relentless pursuit of binary voting... has been a cause of countless tragedies. This book is brilliant: political controversies should rarely if ever be 'resolved' by majority vote.” Arend Lijphart, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of California, San Diego “[for] those who do not believe in a black-or-white world... a very important and extremely timely contribution...” Věra Stojarová, Associate Professor of Political Science, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic “Peter’s challenge to the binary “win-lose” approach is urgently necessary, as is his proposal for an eminently more reasonable, accountable, and participatory system.” Dr. Valery Perry, Democratization Policy Council, Sarajevo “...the preferential points vote... would be the more accurate way to make decisions, and the consequences far more peaceful.” Lord Boyce, House of Lords “He builds a case for a specific version of preferential procedure, not only for elections, but for decision making as well.” Hannu Nurmi, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of Turku, Finland “A particularly strong plea in favour of voting procedures... which go far beyond the usual 'yes or no' ballots. [He uses] an alert prose and a wealth of illuminating and easily graspable examples.” Maurice Salles, Emeritus Professor, Université de Caen Normandie

Book excerpt: A fascinating and accessible guide to democracy in the UK: what it means, how it works and why we need to protect it. As protestors around the world risk their lives in pursuit of democracy, in the UK the word has never seemed so tarnished. Surveys regularly show our politicians are not liked, not trusted and not wanted. Voter turnout is shockingly low, and episodes such as the MPs'' expenses scandal serve to confirm the opinion that public officials are all as bad as each other. So what is the answer? Lighting the way through the corridors of power, Dan Jellinek provides a unique and accessible guide to democracy in Britain, explaining how its elements work - from national and local government to free speech, the internet and the rule of law -- and the role that we, the public, need to play to keep the wheels turning. Illustrated by Harry Venning ("Clare in the Community, Hamlet"), "People Power"'s mission is not only to explain but to galvanise and engage people in a positive way. If you want to know how your small actions can bring about big changes, how you can improve your lot and the lives of others, then you must read this book. Stand up and be counted. The power is in your hands.

Book DEMOCRACY

  • Pages : 422 pages

Book excerpt: THEY SAY WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY. WE ARE FREE AND WE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL. But just how "Free" are we? How democratic are our so-called "Democracies"? Is it enough to simply elect our leaders and sit back, helpless, as they rule over us like dictators? What good is selecting our politicians, if we cannot control our media, police or soldiers? If we must blindly follow our teachers' and bosses' commands, whilst at school and in the workplace, is it not a little naïve to believe that we are the masters of our own destinies? And if our resources are controlled by a tiny cabal of plutocrats, bankers and corporations; can we honestly say that our economies are being run for us? Could things not be a little bit more, well, democratic? Indeed they can! “Democracy: A User's Guide” shows us how... Within the pages of this story-filled book, we shall visit Summerhill, a democratic school in the east of England, before stopping off in Brazil to check out Semco, where workplace democracy is the name of the game. We will travel to Rojava, to explore life in a democratic army, and head to Spain, to see why Podemos is giving liquid democracy a go. We shall travel back in time, to see democracy at work in hunter-gatherer societies, tribal confederacies, the guilds and on the commons. We will consider the case for participatory budgeting, deliberative democracy, collaborative hiring, community currencies, peer-to-peer lending, and much much more. The message is clear and concise: Democracy does not have to be a pipe dream. We have all the tools we need to rule ourselves. Get your copy of Joss Sheldon's masterpiece today...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have Malta and Cyprus - both EU members – transitioned from colonial island states to independent democracies? With the assistance of primary documentation this book traces the difficult path of these two states to becoming independent liberal democracies by using the pathway of democratization through decolonization. Using socio-economic and political data, analysed through the microscope of political science and international relations theories, Isabelle Calleja Ragonesi charts the progress of the two islands in the context of a number of four distinct phases. Firstly decolonization, independence and achieving the status of procedural democracies; secondly post-colonial independence consolidating democracy and regime breakdown; thirdly sovereign nation-state status and second attempts at consolidating democracy and finally attempting to reach substantive democracy status and EU membership. The study of these two states is contextualized within the context of democratization in Southern Europe and the cases of Malta and Cyprus provide new insights on the region for scholars of political science and international institutions.
