This book was released on 2016 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bhutan, the public sector is usually seen as the most desirable employer. This study asks if this can be attributed to public sector employees receiving higher wages than comparable private sector workers. To answer the question, the study combines an Oaxaca-type decomposition of wage differentials into characteristics and coefficients effects with a multinomial logit model for self-selection into labor force participation and the public or private sector. The study finds that the public/private wage differential is sizeable but can entirely be accounted for by observable characteristics. At the same time, there is strong evidence that preferences for public sector jobs are caused by pronounced intersectoral differences in overall compensation packages, in particular fringe benefits.

Book Gross National Happiness and Macroeconomic Indicators in the Kingdom of Bhutan

Download or read book Gross National Happiness and Macroeconomic Indicators in the Kingdom of Bhutan written by Sriram Balasubramanian and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the origins and use of the concept of Gross National Happiness (or subjective well-being) in the Kingdom of Bhutan, and the relationship between measured well-being and macroeconomic indicators. While there are only a few national surveys of Gross National Happiness in Bhutan, the concept has been used to guide public policymaking for the country’s various Five-Year Plans. Consistent with the Easterlin Paradox, available evidence indicates that Bhutan’s rapid increase in national income is only weakly associated with increases in measured levels of well-being. It will be important for Bhutan to undertake more frequent Gross National Happiness surveys and evaluations, to better build evidence for comovement of well-being and macroeconomic concepts such as real national income.

Book Comparisons Between Public and Private Sector Union Wage Differentials

Download or read book Comparisons Between Public and Private Sector Union Wage Differentials written by Joseph S. Tracy and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stylized fact in the growing literature on public sector labor markets is that estimates of public sector union wage premia are significantly lower than estimates of private sector union wage premia. In this paper I investigate the hypothesis that this difference may in part be due to the differing legal environments in which public and private sector unions operate. Using data from the Current Population Survey and the Census of Population, I find that public sector union wage differentials increase significantly with the degree of legal protection afforded to the union in bargaining. However, the estimated public sector union wage premia when no legal controls are included in the specification are close to the estimated premia under the strongest legal environment. Consequently, while controlling for the legal environment in the public Sector is important, it may not reconcile the differences between estimated public and private sector union wage premia.

Bhutan is known for its unique approach towards measuring progress through the Gross National Happiness (GNH) index, rather than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The index measures happiness and well-being in areas such as community vitality, cultural diversity, environmental conservation, and good governance. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Bhutan, and it is deeply ingrained in the country's culture. The government has also placed emphasis on preserving the country's cultural heritage, and Bhutan is known for its architecture, art, dances, and festivals. Visitors to Bhutan can explore ancient dzongs (fortresses) and monasteries, hike the stunning Himalayan mountains, and experience unique cultural events such as the Paro Tsechu (festival). With its focus on sustainable development and preservation of its cultural heritage, Bhutan offers an unforgettable and enriching travel experience.
