Book The Public Library Effectiveness Study

Download or read book The Public Library Effectiveness Study written by Nancy A. Van House and published by Chicago : American Library Association. This book was released on 1993 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Public Library Effectiveness Study was to define effectiveness for the public library institution. The research was designed not to measure effectiveness or evaluate particular libraries or groups of libraries, but rather to identify the feature or features of a public library that most directly attest to its effectiveness. The major questions the study addressed were what measures have been used to define effectiveness; what are the indicators and dimensions of public library effectiveness; whether constituent groups differ in their preferences among indicators and dimensions and in their definitions of public library effectiveness; and whether differences in the individual libraries' domains affect their constituents' preferences concerning effectiveness or organizational performance on the indicators. The study focused on public libraries and is intended to serve as a prototype for a methodology for identifying effectiveness indicators and dimensions for other types of libraries. The five chapters are: (1) "The Enigma of Effectiveness"; (2) "Methodology"; (3) "Findings Regarding Indicators and Dimensions of Effectiveness"; (4) "Findings Regarding Roles"; and (5) "Conclusions." The questionnaires used in the study, as well as the statistical findings, are found in the appendices. Also included is a 38-item bibliography. (JLB)

Book Lifelong Learning in Public Libraries

Download or read book Lifelong Learning in Public Libraries written by Donna L. Gilton and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifelong Learning in Public Libraries demonstrates that public librarians can promote learning by combining the elements of Information Literacy Instruction (ILI) with traditional practices of public libraries. This approach contributes to the information enfranchisement of patrons and enhances the fulfillment of the traditional goals and purposes of libraries. Donna L. Gilton provides background on ILI and current developments in public library instruction and also examines educational theories and practices derived from the fields of behaviorism, cognitive psychology, constructivism, and educational humanism. Additional chapters delve into practices developed to deal with diverse groups and translate the theories and practices that have been outlined into a well-coordinated plan. The final chapters survey the role of libraries as cultural institutions. This book introduces the field of ILI to public librarians in the context of their own traditions and shows the unique ways that ILI can be implemented in public library settings. It encourages librarians to rethink practices to incorporate the principles of ILI and will enable public librarians to extend and enrich their instruction on information use. Lifelong Learning in Public Libraries is a valuable resource for librarians, educators, and leaders of public organizations.

Book excerpt: Challenges conventional thinking and top-down definitions, instead drawing on the library user's perspective to argue that the public library's most important function is providing commonplace reading materials and public space. Challenges a professional ethos about public libraries and their responsibilities to fight censorship and defend intellectual freedom. Demonstrates that the American public library has been (with some notable exceptions) a place that welcomed newcomers, accepted diversity, and constructed community since the end of the 19th century. Shows how stories that cultural authorities have traditionally disparaged- i.e. books that are not "serious"- have often been transformative for public library users.

Book Handbook of Research on Library Response to the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Library Response to the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Holland, Barbara and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the spread of COVID-19, conferences have been canceled, schools have closed, and libraries around the world are facing difficult decisions on which services to offer and how, ranging from minimal restrictions to full closures. Depending on the country, state, or city, a government may have a different approach, sometimes ordering the closure of all institutions, others indicating that it’s business as usual, and others simply leaving decisions up to library directors. All libraries worldwide have been affected, from university libraries to public library systems and national libraries. Throughout these closures, libraries continue to provide services to their communities, which has led to an emerging area of research on library services, new emerging technologies, and the advancements made to libraries during this global health crisis. The Handbook of Research on Library Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic consists of chapters that contain essential library services and emerging research and technology that evolved and/or has continued during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been undertaken as a result. The chapters provide in-depth research, surveys, and information on areas such as remote working, machine learning, data management, and the role of information during COVID-19. This book is a valuable reference tool for practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in the current state of libraries during a pandemic and the future outlook.
