Book South African performance and archives of memory

Download or read book South African performance and archives of memory written by Yvette Hutchison and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how South Africa is negotiating its past in and through various modes of performance in contemporary theatre, public events and memorial spaces. It analyses the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a live event, as an archive, and in various theatrical engagements with it, asking throughout how the TRC has affected the definition of identity and memory in contemporary South Africa, including disavowed memories. Hutchison then considers how the SA-Mali Timbuktu Manuscript Project and the 2010 South African World Cup opening ceremony attempted to restage the nation in their own ways. She investigates how the Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park embody issues related to memory in contemporary South Africa. She also analyses current renegotiations of popular repertoires, particularly songs and dances related to the Struggle, revivals of classic European and South African protest plays, new history plays and specific racial and ethnic histories and identities.

Book Apartheid s Festival

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leslie Witz
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2003-10-06
  • ISBN : 9780253216137
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Apartheid s Festival written by Leslie Witz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid's Festival highlights the conflicts and debates that surrounded the 1952 celebration of the 300th anniversary of the landing of Jan Van Riebeeck and the founding of Cape Town, South Africa. Taking place at the height of the apartheid era, the festival was viewed by many as an opportunity for the government to promote its nationalist, separatist agenda in grand fashion. Leslie Witz's fine-grained examination of newspapers, brochures, pamphlets, and advertising materials reveals the expectations of the festival planners as well as how the festival was engineered, historical figures were reconstructed, and the ANC and other anti-apartheid organizations mounted opposition to it. While laying open the darker motives of the apartheid regime, Witz shows that the production of local history is part of a global process forged by the struggle between colonialism and resistance. Readers interested in South Africa, representations of nationalism, and the making of public history will find Apartheid's Festival to be an important study of a society in transition.

Book Slavery in the Islamic World

Download or read book Slavery in the Islamic World written by Mary Ann Fay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume determines where slavery in the Islamic world fits within the global history of slavery and the various models that have been developed to analyze it. To that end, the authors focus on a question about Islamic slavery that has frequently been asked but not answered satisfactorily, namely, what is Islamic about slavery in the Islamic world. Through the fields of history, sociology, literature, women's studies, African studies, and comparative slavery studies, this book is an important contribution to the scholarly research on slavery in the Islamic lands, which continues to be understudied and under-represented in global slavery studies.

Book South Africa

  • Author : Nancy L. Clark
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2022-04-06
  • ISBN : 1000555097
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book South Africa written by Nancy L. Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of South Africa examines the history of South Africa from 1948 to the present, covering the economic background to racial segregation, the introduction of the oppressive policy of apartheid, the eventual collapse of White supremacy, and the legacy of apartheid to the present day. Fully revised, the fourth edition incorporates new original research, particularly from the records of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and includes additional popular culture images, such as posters linked to the international anti-apartheid struggle. These help to further emphasise the mounting popular opposition to state repression in the 1970s and 1980s. By developing an analysis of recent economic and political issues that are rooted in the apartheid regime, particularly the continuing divide between rich and poor along racial lines and the impact of public corruption known as 'state capture', South Africa provides a current, clear, and succinct introduction to the ideology and practice of apartheid. Illustrated with photographs, maps, and figures, and including a Chronology, Glossary, Who’s Who, and updated Further Reading section, the fourth edition of South Africa is an essential text for students studying all aspects of apartheid in South Africa.

Book South Africa s water governance hydraulic mission 1912 2008 in a WEF Nexus context

Download or read book South Africa s water governance hydraulic mission 1912 2008 in a WEF Nexus context written by Johann W.N. Tempelhoff and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologists, physicists and ecologists currently promote the idea of a post-Holocene epoch – the Anthropocene. As a result of constant innovation and modernisation in the fields of engineering, natural science, management studies and environmental studies there has been a growing awareness of the intrinsic interaction between humankind and the environment. Humankind has become part of the environmental dynamics, to the extent that they are literally able to change ecosystems. Nowhere is the impact more evident than in the anthropogenic engagement with the hydrosphere – from the smallest pool of water to the earth’s atmosphere. Comprehensive infrastructure development in water and sanitation, the growing trend to seek additional resources in the form of groundwater, desalinated seawater, and recycled wastewater, as well as special attention being given to capturing and preserving rainwater, bear evidence of a timely response to climate change, population growth and rapid development in many water-stressed regions of the world. The purpose of the book is to provide a historical overview of the manner in which South Africa’s water resources have been governed from a time when the Union of South Africa was formed, in 1910, up to 2008, a time of a growing global awareness of the potential impact that climate change may have on water resources in a key region of southern Africa, notable for increasing levels of aridity and more erratic rainfall patterns. This focus on the history of water affairs in South Africa makes it possible for scholars to comprehend the contemporary transitions made in the country’s water governance system since the establishment in 2014 of the Department of Water and Sanitation. The focus is on the Water–Energy–Food nexus, a strategy which holistically contemplates the governance and use of water from the perspective of the interconnection between water, energy and food as resources.

Book The Creation of Tribalism in Southern Africa

Download or read book The Creation of Tribalism in Southern Africa written by Leroy Vail and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-01-07 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a quarter century of "nation building," most African states are still driven by ethnic particularism—commonly known as "tribalism." The stubborn persistence of tribal ideologies despite the profound changes associated with modernization has puzzled scholars and African leaders alike. The bloody hostilities between the tribally-oriented Zulu Inkhata movement and supporters of the African National Congress are but the most recent example of tribalism's tenacity. The studies in this volume offer a new historical model for the growth and endurance of such ideologies in southern Africa.
