Book Hearing Voices Demonic and Divine

Download or read book Hearing Voices Demonic and Divine written by Christopher C. H. Cook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.

Book God Psychosis and I A Journey into My Own Mind

Download or read book God Psychosis and I A Journey into My Own Mind written by Aimee Wilson and published by PublishAmerica. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book—God, Psychosis and I: A Journey into My Own Mind—is not only a narration, but also a revelation of a woman's Christian beliefs put to test after bouts of depression beginning in early teenage years, that progressed into paranoid schizophrenia in 1997. After she earned her Masters in Psychology, the sophistication and the well-esteemed modern-day psychology fell short of an answer. Ultimately, she discovered that Biblical truths are not after all obsolete as an approach in dealing with her mental condition. This book is not an "all-out juxtaposition" of science and religion rather a personal journey to the complex world of psychosis, in which she has become a subject of her own study!

Book In the Fellowship of His Suffering

Download or read book In the Fellowship of His Suffering written by Elahe Hessamfar and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is often considered one of the most destructive forms of mental illness. Elahe Hessamfar's personal experience with her daughter's illness has led her to ask some pressing and significant questions about the cause and nature of schizophrenia and the Church's role in its treatment. With a candid and revealing look at the history of mental illness, In the Fellowship of His Suffering describes schizophrenia as a variation of human expression. Hessamfar uses a deeply theological rather than pathological approach to interpret the schizophrenic experience and the effect it has on both the patients and their families. Effectively drawing on the Bible as a source of knowledge for understanding mental illness, she offers a reflective yet innovative view of whether the Church could or should intervene in such encounters and what such an intervention might look like. Hessamfar's comprehensive work will provoke powerful responses from anyone interested in the prominent social issue of mental illness. Her portrayal of the raging debate between treating 'insanity' either pastorally or medically will enthral readers, be they Christians, medical students or those in the field of psychiatry and social sciences.

Book The Three Christs of Ypsilanti

Download or read book The Three Christs of Ypsilanti written by Milton Rokeach and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II. The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serves as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity.”

Book God Psychosis

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Harwood
  • Publisher : World Audience Incorporated
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9781935444176
  • Pages : 428 pages

Download or read book God Psychosis written by William Harwood and published by World Audience Incorporated. This book was released on 2009 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godworship is a contagious form of insanity that is within 300 years of exterminating the human race. God addicts are not committing anthropocide, by environmental pollution and overpopulation, out of malice. Rather, they are convinced that the world is coming to an end within their lifetimes, at which time a deus ex machina is going to carry victims of its mind-AIDS off to a Cloud Cuckoo Land in the sky, and sentence the sane, intelligent and educated minority to be tortured with flamethrowers for eternity in an underworld Auschwitz that can only be described as a sadist's dream. No one who reads a Tanakh, Bible or Koran with his brain in gear can fail to recognize that the character called "God" in English mistranslations is the most sadistic, evil, mass-murdering psychopath in all fiction, and that those allegedly holy books are the most obscene paeans to evil ever written, with Mein Kampf and the Left Behind series their only serious competitors. Be warned. Unless humankind exterminates religion within 150 years, there will not be a human being left on earth in 300 years.

Book Wrestling With My Thoughts

Download or read book Wrestling With My Thoughts written by Sharon Hastings and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She couldn't believe it. There she was with her medical qualifications sitting on the floor of a mental hospital. She'd been baptized, offered her life to God, wanted to serve him anywhere, but no, surely not this... Sharon Hastings is absolutely passionate about helping anyone who suffers from 'severe and enduring mental illness' (SEMI): schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder. She wants the church to know all about these illnesses: how they devastate ordinary people and how they need to be treated. By telling her story, warts and all, showing her own tortuous, painful journey, she equips us to come alongside loved ones, fellow church members, friends and neighbours, understanding the social and spiritual ramifications of their illnesses, including them in our activities (where appropriate) and encouraging their spiritual growth. A natural storyteller, the author draws us in. We journey with her as she shares deeply. With wisdom, kindness and the heart of a bruised survivor, she interweaves her exceptional story with vital teaching which cannot be ignored by anyone within the church today.

Book On Satan Demons and Psychiatry

Download or read book On Satan Demons and Psychiatry written by Ragy R. Girgis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to help change misconceptions that have historically pervaded Christianity by educating both laity and clergy about serious mental illness. It will accomplish this goal via an in-depth, exegetic examination of biblical accounts of what may have been untreated serious mental illness from the perspective of a psychiatrist and Christian. This in-depth examination will demonstrate that 1) serious mental illness was likely present and relatively common in biblical times, and similar in phenomenology to how it manifests today, and 2) that some instances of demon-possession and exorcisms as described in the Bible could, in a post-Enlightenment narrative, be better explained by occurring in the context of untreated mental illness, and that this could reveal a great deal of information about the biblical view of mental illness. Some of these accounts are from the Old Testament and some from the New Testament. Each essay will provide an in-depth examination of the biblical account from the perspective of a board-certified psychiatrist who is an expert in the field of serious mental illness and who is also a practicing Christian.
