Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Prayer: A Study in the Philosophy of Religious-Experience Perhaps the most remarkable thing in human experience, and at the same time the most common, is the fact that men pray - not only some men, but all men. In some form or other, under certain circumstances all men pray - Jews, Mohammedans, Buddhists, Christians, Pagans, Atheists, Infidels, Agnostics, Heathens, all alike pray. Prayer is not a matter of accident, or temperament, or sentiment, or habit; it is absolutely universal, co-extensive with the race of mankind. Excerpt: ... psychology of prayer i. the essentially social nature of the self. Man begins as a social being; he does not acquire society. This fact, which seems from one point of view a recognized commonplace, has many farreaching consequences which are not always considered. Moreover, the fact itself has not always been taken as self-evident. According to an older school of philosophy, man began with himself. The self with which he began was a simple, unchangeable substance, dowered with certain inalienable attributes, among which a most important one was a craving for philosophic explanation of the universe. Apparently he knew all the essential facts about this self before he knew anything else; he then proceeded to deduce the rest of the world from the certainty of his self-knowledge. According to this view, man's religion originated as a direct and conscious attempt to solve various theoretical problems, which were supposed to cause great perplexity to the mind of primitive man. Why did certain natural forces act irregularly? How could he himself be in one place in his dreams when his companions assured him that he had passed the night in another place? A supernatural explanation was ohviously the only thing in order. The older view of the self on which this explanation of the origin of religion is based, may have some possible meaning for metaphysics, which deals with the ultimately real constitution of things. Even in this field, however, it has been shown to have its inconveniences. And when we deal with the matter from the standpoint of psychology, that is, from the standpoint of the material which consciousness actually presents to view, we find no use which we can make of such a conception of the self. The self-

Book The Practice of Prayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practice of Prayer Classic Reprint written by G. Campbell Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G Campbell Morgan wrote the Practice of Prayer not just to recommend prayer, but a full biblical underpinning to a habit of prayer and an acknowledgement of the Christian doctrine of the omniscient and omnipotent God. In his life-long distinguished career of biblical study Morgan was particularly struck by the passage where the disciples beseech Jesus, 'Lord, teach us to pray'. Reverend Morgan was both insistent that the modern church consider the necessity of wholehearted, faithful prayer and the most appropriate way to achieve it. He believed that the answers were furnished to the faithful by God but that the development of faith, the knowledge of how to pray and even more importantly the appropriate attitude for worship were crucial to righteous worship. In this work he explains his concept of the correct method. Morgan examines each element of the trinity thoughtfully and explains in clear and poetic language the role that each element of the trinity plays in enabling the ideal practice of prayer. He identifies a tantalising human emotionality in Christ, the capacity for mercy in God and the inspiration for prayer that he attributes to the Holy Spirit. He refuses bars to prayer and urges those who would receive the full benefit of prayer to eschew activities that would block them from periods of theological reflection in favour of a more reflective approach to faith. As as prominent teacher, theologian and minister Reverend Morgan's arguments about the ideal approach to the practice and theory of prayer reflect his experience and education, as well as an emotional and moving account of spiritual closeness to God that he felt through prayer. For those seeking to expand the meditative element of their worship this book will linger on in the mind.
