Book The Mentally Defective Child

Download or read book The Mentally Defective Child written by Meredith Young and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mentally Defective Child: Written Specially for School Teachers, and Others Interested in the Educational Treatment and After-Care of Mentally Defective School Children The question of mental deficiency, particularly as it affects school children, has quite recently assumed considerable importance. Members of Education Committees, Directors of Education, School Medical Officers, School Teachers, Members of Care or After-Care Committees, Members and Officers of Local Authorities formed under the provisions of the Mental Deficiency Act, 1913, and many others find themselves called upon to assist in discovering these sometimes difficult cases, and in devising means for their training, care and control. Though there are many excellent books written for the medical profession - from many of which indeed I have freely quoted in these pages - I do not know of any which have been specially written for the layman. The Central Association for the Care of the Mentally Defective recently inaugurated a highly successful Special Summer Course of training on this subject for School Teachers at Birmingham and, as part of this course, I was invited to give a series of short lectures on the medical aspect of the subject. Book The Psychology of Subnormal Children

Download or read book The Psychology of Subnormal Children written by Leta S. Hollingworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Subnormal Children When the growth of the movement to establish special classes for children who are subnormal in intelligence there has grown the demand for teachers who are trained in the psychology and education of such children. It is my hope that this volume, which consists of lectures given for some years past in Teachers College, Columbia University, may in a measure serve the purpose of such teachers. It is addressed primarily to them, rather than to clinicians, for whom the majority of books on this subject have been hitherto especially prepared. The discussion is, therefore, confined largely to the educational psychology of mentally deficient children, with relatively slight emphasis on methods of identification and diagnosis. The illustrative matter, also, relates to the achievement of defectives, rather than to their clinical features. There has been a very conscientious effort to base the discussion soundly upon the results of psychological research, as set forth in the references appended. The lists of references are selected, not complete, except in the case of chapters on the psychology of development and learning. On these subjects the purpose has been to refer to all published experimental research bearing directly upon defectives. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment and Education of Mentally Feeble Children IN considering this subject, we should bear in mind that there are usually bodily imperfections associated with the mental deficiency, and that unless the physical condition of the child is improved, no i amelioration of the mental state can be i expected. We should therefore, in the first place, use every effort to strengthen the body and alleviate its defects, and then undertake the moral and intellectual training. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development in the Child This movement, known as child study, has re ceived great impulse in this country within a few years, especially through the labors of Dr. Stanley Hall, who may be called the pioneer and enthusiastic promoter of the good work. Prof. M. W. Hum phreys, of Tennessee, and Prof. Edward S. Holden, of California, published their investigations into the vocabularies of children soon after Darwin published his biographical sketch of his infant son and Taine his essay Sur l'aquisition du Langage. Mr. E. H. Russell, Principal of the State Normal School of Worcester, Mass, was one of the first to commence in his school a systematic collection of data regard ing the development of children. Recently, Prof. Earl Barnes, in the Leland Stanford, Junior, Uni versity, has made large additions to our knowledge of the development of the conceptions of children in regard to art, religion, and some other fields. Every day one comes to hear of some new laborer in this province of pedagogy. The results recorded in this volume are chiefly of three kinds.
