Book The Psychology of Health and Happiness Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Psychology of Health and Happiness Classic Reprint written by La Forest Potter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Health and Happiness The law of life is progress, never retrogression. The so-called degeneration (the doom of the non-selected) is really a process of growth. That which seems to our human experience infinity is but a momentary incident in the vast related whole Of life. In the great law of selection of the fittest, it is conceivable that the degen crate is potentially more fit than his surviving neighbor, and in the ascent of life that he may outstrip him. Every force, every form of energy works through law. No advance is possible but through conformity to it. The principles of psychology underlie all human growth. The natural world in growth responds to its highest possibilities unswervingly, eternally. The human growth follows the same process. The highest achievement of man, indubitably, is thought power; and this energy is, of all forms, most powerful because it is the culmination. Conformation to this law means for man not only mould ing but making power; not adjustment merely, but crea tive possibility. Aberration from this law is unbalance (disease). Disease, from this standpoint, therefore, has broad scope. It is contemporaneous with life's begin nings. A rational interpretation of those forces which make for this unbalance should lead far toward adjust ment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quest for Health and Happiness What was yesterday an abstract science in the college classroom is to-day a science of su preme interest to the general public. The quest for health and happiness has converted the sci ence of psychology into the most popular of the modern sciences. Great movements like the Em manuel Church Movement of Boston, the work under Bishop Fallows of Chicago, and similar movements in some of the larger churches in New York and Brooklyn, numerous mental heal ing and metaphysical clubs, as well as hundreds of smaller clubs and classes for the study of psychic phenomena, have come into existence within a few months. Many of these movements are within the Christian Church. Their leaders have assumed that the work of healing functional disorders, as well as moral and spiritual weaknesses, be longs to the Christian minister and as such ought to be made a part of the work of the Church. Book A Study of Man and the Way to Health Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of Man and the Way to Health Classic Reprint written by J. D. Buck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Man and the Way to Health There never was a time in the history of letters when so great facilities and so few barriers were presented to the study of man as now. Investigation is to-day practically free. There are no barriers to any study that does not interfere directly with the life, liberty and happiness of another. There may, indeed, be found a lurking remnant of the old persecution, but fortunately it is seldom marshaled in the name of religion. It rather issues from the camp of the nihilist, as a rather mild form of ridicule of him who ven tures to question the realm scientifically dubbed the un knowable. Yet even here the progress of science in the realm of nature's finer forces has been so great that the majority of really earnest and intelligent persons declare, that they are not prepared to say what is possible, and what not, and that they would hardly be surprised at any thing. Among the really devout and earnest souls it is usually enough that one earnestly seeks the truth for the benefit of man in order to enlist attention and courteous examination. The motto of these is any thing that is right and true for the benefit of humanity. It is true that there does not appear on the surface of things now-a-days so great lsolicitude for the glory of God, for the reason that it has been discerned in these later times that the glory of God depends on the elevation of man; for only as man's thoughts are purified and his life elevated can he seek and adore the source of all life, the bestower of all good, and the fountain of all truth. Book Stumbling on Happiness

Download or read book Stumbling on Happiness written by Daniel Gilbert and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A smart and funny book by a prominent Harvard psychologist, which uses groundbreaking research and (often hilarious) anecdotes to show us why we’re so lousy at predicting what will make us happy – and what we can do about it. Most of us spend our lives steering ourselves toward the best of all possible futures, only to find that tomorrow rarely turns out as we had expected. Why? As Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert explains, when people try to imagine what the future will hold, they make some basic and consistent mistakes. Just as memory plays tricks on us when we try to look backward in time, so does imagination play tricks when we try to look forward. Using cutting-edge research, much of it original, Gilbert shakes, cajoles, persuades, tricks and jokes us into accepting the fact that happiness is not really what or where we thought it was. Among the unexpected questions he poses: Why are conjoined twins no less happy than the general population? When you go out to eat, is it better to order your favourite dish every time, or to try something new? If Ingrid Bergman hadn’t gotten on the plane at the end of Casablanca, would she and Bogey have been better off? Smart, witty, accessible and laugh-out-loud funny, Stumbling on Happiness brilliantly describes all that science has to tell us about the uniquely human ability to envision the future, and how likely we are to enjoy it when we get there.
