Book Horse Training by Modern Methods Classic Reprint

Download or read book Horse Training by Modern Methods Classic Reprint written by Alan Melvill Pope and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Training by Modern Methods The object of this book is to arrange in the most convenient, clear, and concise form the modern system of horse-training, in so far as it is applicable to the training of horses in the mounted service of the United States. No attempt has been made in any case to improve upon methods already deemed correctly the best horsemen; and as such methods can be found dealing with all points of training, it follows that the subject matter in this book is not original. Where the best was to be found, there it has been sought, and where the authors of previous works have expressed their ideas in language considered the most concise and clear, their words have been copied verbatim, with due acknowledgement to the authors. Excerpt: ... over which the horse will be made to pass. He is ordered to look for it and bring it and he is made to go at a walk to the spot where it is hidden. Having arrived at one step from the heap of sand among which the handkerchief is hidden the circus master makes the sign to stop and the horse stops; by another sign he tells him to paw the ground, and being at the right distance from the heap, the heap is destroyed and the handkerchief is found. By another sign he tells the horse to seize it with his teeth and the horse seizes the handkerchief with his teeth and carries it. These actions have been taught separately and joined together by the circus master in order to make it appear that the horse has himself thought of looking for the handkerchief and bringing it, whilst the horse has performed the several actions Oh the several signals associated with them. By repeating these actions the horse also remembers them and does them better and more readily, and I think that the horse which has many times sought the handkerchief comes to understand that the heap of sand contains the handkerchief. It is the same as regards making the horse write the name of a city or of a spectator. The letters of the alphabet designed on pieces of thin planking attached at a right angle to other pieces of planking to make them stand upright and easy to grasp with the teeth are arranged on the ground in a circle at intervals of one yard or more. To produce the illusion in the spectators the circus master with a loud voice commands the horse to write a name and makes him walk round inside the circle formed by the letters and he accompanies the horse walking some steps away from him in a smaller circle. Whilst the horse, walking in the circle formed by the letters, ..
