Book EFP is Right for Me

Download or read book EFP is Right for Me written by Jenna Miller and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) is a term used to describe interventions that utilize horses and/or horseback riding activities within the context of a psychotherapeutic relationship. This dissertation recognizes the rising popularity of animal-assisted therapy programs, discusses the anecdotal and documented usage and efficacy of EFP programs, and highlights the limited availability of empirically-supported, published research in the field of EFP. A brief survey was conducted to explore the current practices of mental health practitioners in the field of EFP. This substudy, the results, and implications are discussed briefly. this dissertation further identifies areas for research, consideration, and development in the area of EFP. Following this is a thorough introduction to the included treatment program, EFP is Right for Me! EFP is Right for Me! is a 12-week EFP program for children ages six to ten. The program is designed to address some of the difficulties commonly faced by children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), including symptoms of behavioral dysregulation, problems completing goal-oriented tasks, and difficulties forming and maintaining social relationships. Book Effect of Equine facilitated Psychotherapy on Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in Youth with History of Maltreatment and Abuse

Download or read book Effect of Equine facilitated Psychotherapy on Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in Youth with History of Maltreatment and Abuse written by Leslie M. McCullough and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic and severe maltreatment of children in the form of abuse and neglect can provoke a host of neuro/psycho/emotional/physiological problems that can manifest in developmental delays, learning disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), behavioral disorders such as conduct disorder, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to the multidimensional landscape of PTSD, together with the differing treatment needs of the various stages of the disorder, the ages of victims and considering the non-verbal and symbolic language of children, experts agree that research is needed to determine alternative treatment interventions best suited for victims of severe maltreatment. Equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) is one example of a comprehensive, child-friendly, experiential treatment for PTSD. The EFP model employed in this study incorporated a mind-body-emotion-spirit approach that invited the creation of metaphor to mirror the client's life. To test the efficacy of using EFP with traumatized youth, a quasi-experimental study was conducted using a purposive convenience sample of eleven youth ages 10-18 who presented with PTSD symptomotology. Participants received eight 1.5-2 hour EFP sessions. The impact of the intervention was examined by the Children's Revised Impact of Events Scale -13 (CRIES-13, a standardized measure of PTSD in children). The strength of the human-animal bonding between equines and participants was measured by the Human-Animal Bond Scale (HABS). Data analysis conducted via nonparametric sign tests, using weighted measures (that later measures were weighted more heavily, theorizing that the clinical improvements would be increasing and cumulative over time) indicated identical significant results both for the CRIES-13 (9 positive pairs, 2 negative pairs, p = 0.033) and the HABS (9 positive pairs, 2 negative pairs, p = 0.033). Interestingly, there was no correlation between the CRIES-13 and HABS instruments (Spearman's Rho = -0.228, p =.25), possibly implying that the EFP treatment effects are multi modal, working in multiple directions at the same time. Significant results in both measures suggest that EFP may be a viable psychotherapy for traumatized youth suffering PTSD symptomotology. However, given a limited sample size and the absence of a control group, further investigation is warranted.

Book Embodied Relating and Transformation

Download or read book Embodied Relating and Transformation written by Hillary Sharpe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What kinds of embodied and relational learning can come from developing a responsive relationship with a horse? What insights might such ways of learning offer counselors and educators? In this book, the authors explore how women challenged by disordered eating develop transformative relational and embodied experiences through Equine-Facilitated Counseling (EFC). Embodiment refers to how we engage with others and the world in often habitual and taken for granted ways that shape who we are and the relationships we have. These habitual ways of being provide us with a sense of stability, but they can sometimes become constraining and problematic (as in the case of eating disorders). Our corporeal engagement with the world structures such habits, but it can also afford us opportunities to experiment, modify, and challenge problematic patterns, and in some instances, create new and preferred ones. The horses that participate in EFC present a vastly different sort of other who can help clients interrupt their sedimented ways of being and foster moments of responsivity that hold the power to become transformative. This theoretical context presents a different way of thinking about and practicing counseling – one that adds to a growing language of embodiment across a variety of disciplines. Chapters set forth a theoretical context for understanding the following: relationally embodied processes of stability and change, EFC, client stories from our research associated with riding horses in EFC, and implications we see for practice across different healing and learning contexts. "

Book Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Coaching

Download or read book Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Coaching written by Andreas Liefooghe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on over a decade of sustained longitudinal research with a broad range of different user groups, Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Coaching: An Evidence-Based Framework is an essential guide which offers both theoretical foundations and practical models for working with horses in psychotherapy and coaching. While not a panacea for distress and difficulties, the connections that humans find with horses can become a catalyst for deeper self-knowledge. By de-centring the human subject and placing the horse in the middle of the investigation, the ways in which humans make sense of themselves can be explored and more easily understood. Drawing on this wide spectrum of different client groups, the book features intervention studies with expelled teenagers, adults in addiction recovery programmes, children diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, people suffering from trauma and mental health problems, prisoners and even multi-national corporations wanting culture change. The practice of using horses in a psychological intervention is thoroughly scrutinised throughout, with ways of establishing successful change documented and assessed. Liefooghe’s analysis of these studies builds up to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for equine-assisted psychotherapy and coaching. This essential book offers psychotherapists, coaches and all those who work in a helping capacity a clear insight into what horses can and cannot do in a therapeutic role.

Book Effects of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy on Mental Health Outcomes

Download or read book Effects of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy on Mental Health Outcomes written by Martha Jane Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) is widely used as an alternative or adjunctive treatment for individuals with mental health difficulties. However, research supporting the efficacy of EFP for mental health outcomes lacks both quantity and rigor. Therefore, we conducted meta and content analyses to systematically examine the relationships between EFP and mental health outcomes and to assess the features of EFP intervention studies. We included quantitative-based EFP intervention studies dated between 2006-2017 focusing on neurotypical participants with DSM-5 recognized psychological symptoms. The meta-analysis (Study 1) was based on 27 study samples and 984 participants. The results indicated a positive relationship between the use of EFP and mental health outcomes, with a moderate effect size of .27. Based on the subsequent moderator analysis, three study characteristics were found to moderate the effectiveness of EFP: age, target outcome, and program duration. Specifically, interventions targeted at mood disorders (e.g., anxiety and depression) or children/adolescents produced stronger EFP effect than other modalities or populations. Considering the cost of interventions, brief, standardized, and unmounted interventions were also preferable as both produced similar effects to longer and mounted interventions. The content analysis (Study 2) was based on 33 study samples and 1,197 participants. We systematically examined the features of EFP intervention studies in terms of reporting standards, research design, and program design and delivery to identify sound practices and to detect areas where improvements can be made in order to benefit future research and practices. Noteworthy strengths as well as features that warrant growth in terms of reporting, program procedure, and research design are discussed.
