This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major text designed to help professionals and students evaluate the merits of popular yet controversial practices in clinical psychology, differentiating those that can stand up to the rigors of science from those that cannot. Leading researchers review widely used therapies for alcoholism, infantile autism, ADHD, and posttraumatic stress disorder; herbal remedies for depression and anxiety; suggestive techniques for memory recovery; and self-help models. Other topics covered include issues surrounding psychological expert testimony, the uses of projective assessment techniques, and unanswered questions about dissociative identity disorder. Providing knowledge to guide truly accountable mental health practice, the volume also imparts critical skills for designing and evaluating psychological research programs. It is ideal for use in advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in clinical psychology, psychotherapy, and evidence-based practice.

Download or read book APA Handbook of Testing and Assessment in Psychology Testing and assessment in school psychology and education written by Kurt F. Geisinger and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 2010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The reliability and validity of information obtained from any psychological test is dependent on the scope and psychometric attributes of the instrument used. As in all areas of science, what psychologists discover depends on the quality of the instruments used and the information they provide as well as skillful interpretation of the test results. Better conceptualized instruments yield more accurate and informative data than do weaker instruments. Instruments that uncover more useful information about the individual being examined are more valid and ultimately better inform both researchers and clinicians. The tools school psychologists choose for diagnostic decision making substantially influence the reliability and validity of the information they obtain and the decisions they make. Simply put, the better the tool is, the more valid and reliable the decisions; the more useful the information obtained is, the better the services provided. In this chapter, some important issues regarding quality and effectiveness of the tools used in school psychology are discussed"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2013 APA, all rights reserved).

Download or read book MMPI 2 in Psychological Treatment written by James Neal Butcher and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological treatment--using psychodynamic, behavioral, or any other approach--is most successful when both the therapist and client have a clear understanding of the client's problems, weaknesses, resources, and strengths. In this book, James Butcher, a member of the team that developed the new Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test (MMPI-2), focuses on how the MMPI-2 can provide objective information to both the client and clinician, and how this information can be used in treatment planning and selection. By using the MMPI, the most widely researched and most frequently administered clinical assessment tool, the clinician can provide objective feedback both before treatment begins, as a baseline, and as treatment progresses. The book begins with a descriptive overview of the MMPI-2 and a summary of the empirical correlates underlying the validity of the test and its clinical scales. Dr. Butcher summarizes available treatment-related information that can be obtained from the clinical scales and brings together in one chapter what is known about the use of the traditional MMPI scales in treatment evaluation. Since several MMPI-2 content scales have been found useful for treatment evaluation, these are described in detail. The book will also include several MMPI-2 "special scales," such as Es and Mac-R , which have been found useful in providing specific information about the client's present self-orientation. Dr. Butcher presents a procedure with which to provide test feedback to clients and illustrates this method with several clinical examples. He also discusses the role of computerized psychological interpretation in providing personality descriptions, which can be effectively used in therapy feedback sessions.
