Book The Psychoanalyst and the Child

Download or read book The Psychoanalyst and the Child written by Michel Ody and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychoanalyst and the Child explores the unique nature of psychoanalytic work with children. This book is based on more than 30 years of practice and reflection within the framework of the Alfred Binet Centre in Paris, France. The very great diversity of situations encountered at the Centre brings the issue of therapeutic indications to the forefront. Michel Ody focuses on the diversification of fifteen clinical situations and their theorization, ranging from basic consultation to psychoanalytic treatment. With this framework as his starting-point, he looks at the common features between the therapeutic consultation – a consultation that becomes therapeutic – and the analytic treatment, as well as what differentiates them. This implies examining, at the technical level, the different forms of interventions and interpretations presented as well as their metapsychological articulation. Ody draws on decades of clinical expertise to set out not just the basic considerations and problems typically encountered in work with this patient group, but clear guidelines for methodology and technique. Psychoanalysis can be an intellectual process, dependent on the ability of the patient to express themselves verbally, which can make working clinically with children challenging. The Psychoanalyst and the Child seeks to help psychoanalysts through the most challenging of clinical treatments with this patient group.

Book Psychoanalytic Approaches to the Treatment of Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Psychoanalytic Approaches to the Treatment of Children and Adolescents written by Jerrold R Brandell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nearly one hundred years that have elapsed since Freud’s publication of his pioneering work with “Little Hans,” psychoanalysis has transformed not only our clinical work with children, but has immeasurably enriched our understanding of normal child and adolescent development as well as developmental deviations and derailments. We have gradually come to understand childhood and adolescence as a complex tapestry of developmental themes, conflicts, and crises; sometimes discontinuous or discrete, at other times, harmonious and integrated, yet always occurring within a transactional matrix of environmental influences and internal experience. In this transdisciplinary anthology, eight authors explore the changing terrain of child and adolescent psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy. The contributions, which reflect theoretical and clinical heterogeneity, are both innovative and varied, and range from the highly abstract and theoretical to those that consider very specific dimensions of clinical process. Collectively, they make a compelling case for the continued relevance of psychoanalytic ideas in the treatment of children and adolescents. With insightful contributions by expert psychoanalysts, clinical social workers, and clinical psychologists, Psychoanalytic Approaches to the Treatment of Children and Adolescents: Tradition and Transformation is essential reading for child and adolescent therapists. Psychoanalytic Approaches to the Treatment of Children and Adolescents will increase your knowledge of: the function of play in normal development--and within the treatment relationship psychoanalytic theories and research investigations linking early object loss to depression the nature of adolescent depression the theoretical and clinical dimensions of a two-systems approach to understanding psychopathology and the clinical process the dynamic meaning and clinical management of drug and alcohol abuse, promiscuity, eating disorders, violence, and other self-destructive behaviors the complexities of treating children with neuropsychological deficits

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psycho-Analysis of Children, first published in 1932, is a classic in its subject, and revolutionised child analysis. Melanie Klein had already proved, by the special technique she devised, that she was a pioneer in that branch of analysis. She made possible the extension of psycho-analysis to the field of early childhood, and in this way not only made the treatment of young children possible but also threw new light on psychological development in childhood and on the roots of adult neuroses and psychoses.

Book The Technique of Child Psychoanalysis

Download or read book The Technique of Child Psychoanalysis written by Joseph Sandler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book distills the essence of child psychoanalysis from the practice and thought of its founder Anna Freud, who for over 50 years has been at the forefront of this controversial field. Children are the most refractory of all subjects to treat analytically. Here, for the first time, is a primer on the difficult technique as practiced at the Hampstead Clinic in London, which was founded by Anna Freud and is today the leading child analytic center in the world. She and her colleagues expose their wealth of experience to systematic review, which yields up rich insights not only into child psychoanalysis and psychotherapy but also into basic child development. In addition, their findings have relevance to the understanding of emotional disturbance at all ages. The book follows the treatment situation through all its stages, from the first session to termination and follow-up. It focuses on the interaction between therapist and child in the treatment room, illustrating the points with copious clinical vignettes. One point examined is the structure of treatment with respect to such matters as scheduling sessions and handling interruptions. Another element that comes under scrutiny is the development of the child's relationship to the therapist, which subsumes such factors as establishing an alliance, transference, and resistance. The child's repertoire of expressions, both verbal and nonverbal, is explored, as is the therapist's armamentarium of interpretations and interventions. Woven throughout the description of these elements is incisive commentary by Anna Freud. Her commonsense approach gives the book unique value, lifting it to a rare level of human wisdom.
