Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychic Uplift, or the New Mind Cure As a disease of long standing in an organ will cause it to become chronic, so a disease oi long standing in the mind will cause a mental disease to become chronic. One organ being diseased may cause others to become diseased; one attribute of the mind being diseased, may cause others to become diseased. The lay people must awaken to the fact that the faculties of the mind are capable of becoming diseased as well as the organs of the body and that for a physical disease they should go to a physician for their troubles, while for a mind disease they must go to their own minds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SPIRITUAL UPLIFTING is a collection of experiences, encouragement and inspiration that helped me to be who I am today. A true believer and woman of God. To show others that everyday is not sunshine but that God delivers us through it all. One thing I realized in my belief that God answers all prayers. Sometimes it's YES what we all want to hear. Sometimes it's NO to protect us from forces we can't see. Sometimes it's WAIT you can't handle it right now. My poems are intended to uplift, elevate and console the mind. To remind those reading them there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Trouble comes to make us stronger. We were never promised there wouldn't be trials and tribulations. But, we were promised that we are not alone or forsaken. Our heavenly father always has a ram in the bush. In these contents there is something encouraging and inspiring for everyone. Even those whose lives have been sweeter (easier) than others. Prayerfully you will uplift someone else. Within are my truths, some of my life experiences. Along with the assurance that life is an awesome gift. No matter what one might face. There have been good people and good times in my life. There have been some not so good people and times. We can one day look back on the good and tough times smile and be thankful for the experiences that helped us realize our purpose in life. I inspire you yo stay positive to pray your way through. Laugh when you feel like crying. To put your trust and faith in God not in man. Know that God has all power in his hands. "I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future". Jeremiah 29:11 So relax, enjoy and allow your soul to be soothed. Life is worth the living.

Book For the Souls of Black Folks

Download or read book For the Souls of Black Folks written by Cari Jackson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Souls of Black Folks examines the impact of black religious culture in shaping the ethical values and sociopolitical condition of U.S. blacks. The book reviews the nexus of theological traditions and historical factors that have formed black churches as environments where preachers serve as the moral compass for black churchgoers. For the Souls of Black Folks builds upon the work of sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, who highlighted the presence of a double consciousness in the collective psyche of blacks stemming from racial oppression. The book explores the ways in which that double consciousness, often reflected in black preaching, socializes black Christians to subjugate their own moral authority to that of black preachers. The central argument is that this socialization to submit to preachers greatly underserves black churchgoers in developing and exercising their own power and authority as social agents, and thus significantly impedes the full sociopolitical liberation of all blacks. The book offers important new preaching strategies that more effectively facilitate the empowerment of blacks as critical agents of social transformation and healing in the twenty-first century.

Book Sacred Stories Spiritual Tribes

Download or read book Sacred Stories Spiritual Tribes written by Nancy Tatom Ammerman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nancy Tatom Ammerman examines the stories Americans tell of their everyday lives, from dinner table to office and shopping mall to doctor's office, about the things that matter most to them and the routines they take for granted, and the times and places where the everyday and ordinary meet the spiritual. In addition to interviews and observation, Ammerman bases her findings on a photo elicitation exercise and oral diaries, offering a window into the presence and absence of religion and spirituality in ordinary lives and in ordinary physical and social spaces. The stories come from a diverse array of ninety-five Americans -- both conservative and liberal white Protestants, African American Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Wiccans, and people who claim no religious or spiritual proclivities -- across a range that stretches from committed religious believers to the spiritually neutral. Ammerman surveys how these people talk about what spirituality is, how they seek and find experiences they deem spiritual, and whether and how religious traditions and institutions are part of their spiritual lives.
