Book Commercial Project Management

Download or read book Commercial Project Management written by Robin Hornby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial Project Management fills a void in the project management landscape. Project manager and author Robin Hornby considers commercial project management to be a neglected and poorly understood discipline, a situation he aims to rectify. His new book, with a wealth of ‘how to do it’ advice, explanatory illustrations, practical techniques, and proven checklists, will give contracted project managers a confidence boost and a head start in their demanding role. The book explains how standard projet management practices can be evolved to address the commercial setting and adopted by the professional services firm as a key part of its business operations. At the same time, their project managers must assume a new accountability to the firm’s business manager for revenue, must manage the space between sales and the client, and deal with other business matters defined by contract. This transforms many of the routine tasks and behaviors of the project manager, creates several new ones, and requires new skills. This is a how-to book for project and business managers working in a commercial environment looking for practical guidance on conducting their projects and organizing their firm.

Book Project Management

Book excerpt: As organizations realize the benefits of PM, the need to develop effective management tools rises with the increasing complexity of new technologies and processes. Taking a systems approach to accomplishing goals and objectives, Project Management: Systems, Principles, and Applications covers contemporary tools and techniques of PM from an established pedagogical perspective. A project can be simple or complex. In each case, proven PM processes must be followed with a world systems view of the project environment. While on-the-job training is possible for many of the PM requirements, rigorous and formal training must be used. Consequently, PM resources are of high utility. This text fills the void that exists in the availability of PM resources. Although individual books dealing with management principles, optimization models, and computer tools are available, there are few guidelines for the integration of these three areas for PM purposes. This book integrates these areas into a comprehensive guide to PM. It introduces the triad approach to improve the effectiveness of PM with respect to schedule, cost, and performance constraints within the context of systems modeling. It provides details on an integrated systems PM approach that can help diminish the adverse impacts of these issues through good project planning, organizing, scheduling, and control. Book Strangers to Neighbours

Download or read book Strangers to Neighbours written by Shauna Labman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a leading country in global refugee resettlement, Canada operates a unique program that allows private groups and individuals to sponsor refugees. This innovative approach has received growing international attention, but there remains a need for a more expansive understanding of the sponsorship framework and its potential implications within Canada and across the world. Strangers to Neighbours explains the origins and development of refugee sponsorship, paying particular attention to the unintended consequences and ethical dilemmas it produces for refugee policy. The contributors to this collection draw upon law, social science, and philosophy to bring a more robust and objective perspective on Canada's historical experience with sponsorship into wider conversations about the refugee crisis and resettlement. Together, they present recent cases that exemplify how the model has been applied and how it functions, while also analyzing the challenges that emerge in host-sponsor relations. This volume further examines how sponsorship has been implemented differently in countries such as the United States and Australia. The first dedicated study of refugee sponsorship policy, Strangers to Neighbours assembles leading scholars from a range of disciplines to consider whether Canada's system is indeed a sustainable model for the world.

Book Biennial Report on Operations Evaluation

Download or read book Biennial Report on Operations Evaluation written by The World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-08-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development paradigm has shifted toward private investment, and the private sector has become central in development strategies. There is much to be learned about how to effectively facilitate and mobilize private sector contributions to development. Effective monitoring and evaluation (M and E) systems are critical for learning to catalyze private sector development. In line with this advance, the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency are developing and refining their M and E efforts. In this Biennial Report on Operations Evaluation, the Independent Evaluation Group takes stock of the evolution of the M and E systems in the two organizations, assessing their adequacy, coverage, and quality, as well as their respective results measurement systems. IEG acknowledges progress by the two institutions. IFC has advanced its systems for gathering, analyzing, and applying project information and has strengthened its coverage of indicators that measure results. Information from M and E has become more prominent in its business decisions. However, the institution’s corporate goals are built on indicators of client reach that cannot be solely attributable to IFC, so there is no credible articulation of IFC’s impact. MIGA has introduced self-evaluation of its projects and started gathering some standard development indicators. As a result, individual learning is taking place in the institution. The report shows the importance of IFC and MIGA managements continuing their efforts to deepen M and E and improve their systems. To gain the full benefit of learning from evidence that M and E brings to light, key areas need improvement. IEG offers recommendations for IFC regarding quality, verification of data, and tracing effects. For MIGA, IEG notes that it needs to adapt and streamline its evaluation approach to fit its business practices.

Book Engaging with Fragile States

Download or read book Engaging with Fragile States written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During fiscal 2003-05, World Bank lending and administrative budgets to fragile states amounted to $4.1 billion and $161 million, respectively. This report assesses the effectiveness of this Bank support. The report finds that the Bank and the donor community have improved their operational readiness to engage with fragile states, and made substantial progress on donor coordination at the international policy level. Significant challenges remain, however. Donor agendas have been overly ambitious and need to be made more selective, the effectiveness of donor programs needs to be improved after the immediate post-conflict phase in war-ravaged countries when structural change is needed, and donors need to develop transparent aid allocation criteria that ensure that fragile states will be neither under- nor over-aided. The report makes recommendations to overcome these challenges and distills lessons for the Bank and other donors.
