Book excerpt: This rendition of the Psalms contains the Bible in Basic English along with the Reina-Valera translation in Spanish. The Bible in Basic English is not simply another example of the Bible story put into present-day English. This version is effective in communicating the Bible to those where English is a second language. The language used is Basic English produced by Professor C. K. Ogden. His work identified 850 words which are able to expess every idea English. The BBE was translated by Professor S. H. Hooke using the standard 850 Basic English words. One hundred words that were helpful to understand poetry were added along with 50 "Bible" words for a total of 1,000 words. The Reina-Valera Antigua Bible was first translated and published in 1569 by Casiodoro de Reina in Basel, Switzerland after twelve years of intensive work for the first Spanish Bible. The translation is based on the original Greek and Hebrew text. It has undergone a number of orthographical updates over the years, but is still the most commonly used Bible in Latin America.
