Book excerpt: One of the most accomplished and prominent novels of the Victorian era, Middlemarch is an unsurpassed portrait of nineteenth-century English provincial life. Dorothea Brooke is a young woman of fervent ideals who yearns to effect social change yet faces resistance from the society she inhabits. In this epic in a small landscape, Eliot's large cast of precisely delineated characters and the rich tapestry of their stories result in a wise, compassionate, and astute vision of human nature. As Virginia Woolf declared, George Eliot "was one of the first English novelists to discover that men and women think as well as feel, and the discovery was of great artistic moment." Book excerpt: Offering an in-depth overview and reappraisal of the 1860s in British literature, this innovative volume features in-depth analyses from noted scholars at the tops of their fields. Covering characteristic literary genres of the 1860s (including sensation and lyric, as well as Golden Age children's literature), and topics of current and enduring interest in the field, from empire and slavery to evolution, environmental issues and economics, it incorporates drama as well as poetry and fiction, and emphasizes the history of publishing and periodicals so important to the period. Chapters are attentive to the global context, from Ireland on the stage, to Bengali literature, to Britain's muted response to the US Civil War. The Introduction gives an overview that places these individual chapters in the historical context of the 1860s, as well as the current scholarly conversation in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life is a novel written by English novelist George Eliot under the pen name Mary Ann Evans. George Eliot published it in eight installments (volumes) between 1871 and 1872. Middlemarch, a fictional English Midlands town, served as the setting from 1829 to 1832, telling several unique, intertwining stories with numerous characters. The issues include women's rights, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Middlemarch, despite its humorous features, uses realism to depict historical events such as the 1832 Reform Act, early railways, and King William IV's ascension. It examines historical medicine and reactionary ideas in a stable community confronting unpleasant change. Eliot began writing the two halves of the work in 1869-1870 and finished it in 1871. Despite mixed initial reviews, Eliot now universally regarded it as her best work and one of the great English novels. Mary Anne, or Marian, better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator, and one of the most prominent writers of the Victorian era.

Book Queer Books of Late Victorian Print Culture

Download or read book Queer Books of Late Victorian Print Culture written by Frederick D. King and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer books, like LGBTQ+ people, adapt heteronormative structures and institutions to introduce space for discourses of queer desire. Queer Books of Late-Victorian Print Culture explores print culture adaptations of the material book, examining the works of Aubrey Beardsley, Michael Field, John Gray, Charles Ricketts, Charles Shannon and Oscar Wilde. It closely analyses the material book, including the elements of binding, typography, paper, ink and illustration, and brings textual studies and queer theory into conversation with literary experiments in free verse, fairy tales and symbolist drama. King argues that queer authors and artists revised the Revival of Printing's ideals for their own diverse and unique desires, adapting new technological innovations in print culture. Their books created a community of like-minded aesthetes who challenged legal and representational discourses of same-sex desire with one of aesthetic sensuality.

Book Historical Research Creative Writing and the Past

Download or read book Historical Research Creative Writing and the Past written by Kevin A. Morrison and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although historical research undertaken in different disciplines often requires speculation and imagination, it remains relatively rare for scholars to foreground these processes explicitly as a knowing method. Historical Research, Creative Writing, and the Past brings together researchers in a wide array of disciplines, including literary studies and history, ethnography, design, film, and sound studies, who employ imagination, creativity, or fiction in their own historical scholarship or who analyze the use of imagination, creativity, or fiction to make historical claims by others. This volume is organized into four topical sections related to representations of the past—textual and conceptual approaches; material and emotional approaches; speculative and experiential approaches; and embodied methodologies—and covers a variety of temporal periods and geographical contexts. Reflecting on the methodological, theoretical, and ethical underpinnings of writing history creatively or speculatively, the essays situate themselves within current debates over epistemology and interdisciplinarity. They yield new insights into historical research methods, including archival investigations and source criticisms, while offering readers tangible examples of how to do history differently.
