Download or read book The Provincial Committees of Safety of the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by Agnes Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Provincial Committees of Safety of the American Revolution In the following study of the Committees of Safety the interest of the historical student rather than that of the general reader has been kept in view. The object has been to present in some detail an account of the activity of these revolutionary executives in the separate states, in order that the student of the individual commonwealths, as well as those interested in the Revolution as a whole may find, ready to hand, the essence of a mass of original material. It is hoped, however, that the battles which these Committees fought behind the scenes with poverty, inertia, discouragement and fear, may not prove uninteresting to any lover of American History. This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Committees of Safety of Cumberland and Isle of Wight Counties, Virginia: 1775-1776 In accordance with this provision of the Association local committees were formed very shortly all over the land, and the way in which they carried out the suggestions or directions made by the Continental Congress and by provincial congresses or conventions may be seen in the Cumberland and Isle of Wight proceedings which follow. The Virginia county committees soon became, when in the further progress of the revolution the several agencies of roya 1 government disintegrated the actual governments in great measure of their respective communities till the provisions of Virginia's first constitution, adopted by representatives of her people in June, 1776, went into effect. They were at first called committees of observation, or committees of inspection, or committees of inspection and observation, or committees for carrying out the provisions of the Association, or merely committees, but in course of time, after the formation of the central Committee of Safety by the Virginia Convention on August 24, 1775, they came to be referred to as local committees of safety. Book The Myth of American Individualism

Download or read book The Myth of American Individualism written by Barry Alan Shain and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharpening the debate over the values that formed America's founding political philosophy, Barry Alan Shain challenges us to reconsider what early Americans meant when they used such basic political concepts as the public good, liberty, and slavery. We have too readily assumed, he argues, that eighteenth-century Americans understood these and other terms in an individualistic manner. However, by exploring how these core elements of their political thought were employed in Revolutionary-era sermons, public documents, newspaper editorials, and political pamphlets, Shain reveals a very different understanding--one based on a reformed Protestant communalism. In this context, individual liberty was the freedom to order one's life in accord with the demanding ethical standards found in Scripture and confirmed by reason. This was in keeping with Americans' widespread acceptance of original sin and the related assumption that a well-lived life was only possible in a tightly knit, intrusive community made up of families, congregations, and local government bodies. Shain concludes that Revolutionary-era Americans defended a Protestant communal vision of human flourishing that stands in stark opposition to contemporary liberal individualism. This overlooked component of the American political inheritance, he further suggests, demands examination because it alters the historical ground upon which contemporary political alternatives often seek legitimation, and it facilitates our understanding of much of American history and of the foundational language still used in authoritative political documents.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking account of the American Revolution—from the bestselling author of American Dynasty In this major new work, iconoclastic historian and political chronicler Kevin Phillips upends the conventional reading of the American Revolution by debunking the myth that 1776 was the struggle’s watershed year. Focusing on the great battles and events of 1775, Phillips surveys the political climate, economic structures, and military preparations of the crucial year that was the harbinger of revolution, tackling the eighteenth century with the same skill and perception he has shown in analyzing contemporary politics and economics. The result is a dramatic account brimming with original insights about the country we eventually became.

Book George Washington s Nemesis

Download or read book George Washington s Nemesis written by Christian McBurney and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography attempts to set the record straight for a misunderstood military figure from the American Revolution. Historians and biographers of Charles Lee have treated him as either an enemy of George Washington or a defender of American liberty. Neither approach is accurate; objectivity is required to fully understand the war’s most complicated general. In George Washington’s Nemesis, author Christian McBurney uses original documents (some newly discovered) to combine two dramatic stories to create one balanced view of one of the Revolutionary War’s most fascinating personalities. General Lee, second in command in the Continental Army led by George Washington, was captured by the British in December, 1776. While imprisoned, he gave his captors a plan on how to defeat Washington’s army as quickly as possible. This extraordinary act of treason was not discovered during his lifetime. Less well known is that throughout his sixteen months of captivity and even after his release, Lee continued communicating with the enemy, offering to help negotiate an end to the rebellion. After Lee rejoined the Continental Army, he was given command of many of its best troops together with orders from Washington to attack British general Henry Clinton’s column near Monmouth, New Jersey. But things did not go as planned for Lee, leading to his court-martial for not attacking and for retreating in the face of the enemy. McBruney argues the evidence clearly shows Lee was unfairly convicted and had, in fact, done something beneficial. But Lee had insulted Washington, which made the matter a political contest between the army’s two top generals—only one of whom could prevail.
