Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. ROMAN GERMANY AND THE FREE GERMANS. The two Roman provinces of Upper and Lower Germany were the result of that defeat of the Roman Limitation of, . _ DEGREES Roman or- arms and ot Koman policy under the reign of Augustus which has been already (p. 60 f.) described. The original province of Germany, which embraced the country from the Rhine to the Elbe, subsisted only twenty years, from the first campaign of u. Drusus, 742 u.c., down to the battle of Varus DEGREES d 9 and the fall of Aliso, 762 u.c.; but as, on the one hand, it included the military camps on the left bank of the Rhine--Vindonissa, Mogontiacum, Vetera--and, on the other hand, even after that disaster, more or less considerable portions of the right bank remained Roman, the governorship and the command were not, in a strict sense, done away by that catastrophe, although they were, so to speak, placed in suspense. The internal organisation of the Three Gauls has been already set forth; they embraced the whole country as far as the Rhine without distinction of descent--except that the Ubii, who had only been brought over to settle in Gaul during the last crises, did not belong to the sixty-four cantons, while the Helvetii, the Triboci, and generally the districts elsewhere held in occupation by the Rhenish troops, doubtless did so belong. The intention had been to gather together the German cantons between the Rhine and Elbe into a similar association under Roman supremacy, as had been constituted in the case of the Gallic cantons, and to bestow upon it, in the altar to Augustus of the Ubian town--the germ of the modern Cologne--an executive centre similar to that which the altar of Augustus of Lyons formed for Gaul; for the more remote future the transference

This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Provinces of the Roman Empire From Caesar to Diocletian, Vol. 2 In so far the Parthian empire was the genuine coun terpart to the Roman. As in the one the Oriental vice royship is an exceptional occurrence, so in the other is the Greek city; the general Oriental aristocratic character of the Parthian government is as little injuriously affected by the Greek mercantile towns on the west coast as is the civic organisation of the Roman state by the vassal king doms of Cappadocia and Armenia. While in the state of the Caesars the romano-greek urban commonwealth spreads more and more, and gradually becomes the general form of administration, the foundation of towns the true mark of helleno-roman civilisation, which embraces the Greek mercantile cities and the military colonies of Rome as well as the grand settlements of Alexander and the Alexandrids - suddenly breaks off with the emergence of the Parthian government in the East, and even the existing Greek cities of the Parthian empire wane in the further course of development. There, as here, the rule more and more prevails over the exceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This “valuable” summary of every significant battle from Augustus to Justinian I is “an indispensable reference guide for any student of the Roman military” (The NYMAS Review). In a single volume, Roman Empire at War catalogues and offers a brief description of every significant battle fought by the Roman Empire from Augustus to Justinian I (and most of the minor ones too). In lists arranged both alphabetically and chronologically, the information in each entry is drawn exclusively from Ancient, Late Antique, and Early Medieval texts, in order to offer a brief description of each battle based solely on the information provided by the earliest surviving sources that chronicle the event. This approach provides a concise foundation of information to which you can then confidently apply later scholarly interpretation presented in secondary sources in order to achieve a more accurate understanding of the most likely battlefield scenario. In writing the battle descriptions, the author has not sought to extensively analyze the evidence contained in the surviving accounts, nor embellish them beyond what was necessary to provide clarity to the modern reader. He allows the original writers to speak for themselves, presenting a succinct version of what the ancient chroniclers tell us of these dramatic events. It is an excellent first-stop reference to the many battles of the Roman Empire.
