Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2016, thousands of people travelled to North Dakota to camp out near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to protest the construction of an oil pipeline that is projected to cross underneath the Missouri River a half mile upstream from the Reservation. The Standing Rock Sioux consider the pipeline a threat to the region's clean water and to the Sioux's sacred sites (such as its ancient burial grounds). The encamped protests garnered front-page headlines and international attention, and the resolve of the protesters was made clear in a red banner that flew above the camp: "Defend the Sacred". What does it mean when Native communities and their allies make such claims? What is the history of such claim-making, and why has this rhetorical and legal strategy - based on appeals to religious freedom - failed to gain much traction in American courts? As Michael McNally recounts in this book, Native Americans have repeatedly been inspired to assert claims to sacred places, practices, objects, knowledge, and ancestral remains by appealing to the discourse of religious freedom. But such claims based on alleged violations of the First Amendment "free exercise of religion" clause of the US Constitution have met with little success in US courts, largely because Native American communal traditions have been difficult to capture by the modern Western category of "religion." In light of this poor track record Native communities have gone beyond religious freedom-based legal strategies in articulating their sacred claims: in (e.g.) the technocratic language of "cultural resource" under American environmental and historic preservation law; in terms of the limited sovereignty accorded to Native tribes under federal Indian law; and (increasingly) in the political language of "indigenous rights" according to international human rights law (especially in light of the 2007 U.N. Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples). And yet the language of religious freedom, which resonates powerfully in the US, continues to be deployed, propelling some remarkably useful legislative and administrative accommodations such as the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Reparation Act. As McNally's book shows, native communities draw on the continued rhetorical power of religious freedom language to attain legislative and regulatory victories beyond the First Amendment"--

Book The Public Papers of Governor Edward T Breathitt 1963 1967

Download or read book The Public Papers of Governor Edward T Breathitt 1963 1967 written by Edward Breathitt and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Thompson Breathitt Jr. served as governor of Kentucky from December 12, 1967. The Breathitt administration was notable for its close ties with the national administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson and with Johnson's Great Society programs. Governor Breathitt led successful campaigns for economic and industrial development, civil rights legislation, increased support for education, and expansion and improvement of the state highway and park systems. His most significant defeat was the rejection in 1966 of a new state constitution. His administration won several national awards, including: a Lincoln Key Award (1966) for leadership in the passage of civil rights legislation; Society of Industrial Investors' award (1964) for the best industrial development program; the Midwest Travel Writers Association award (1965) for the best travel promotion program; and the U.S. Department of Interior Distinguished Service Award (1967) for contributions in the field of conservation. Governor Breathitt's papers are of historical importance for the light they shed on one governor's attempts to mesh state and federal actions and to fit federal programming to the needs of his state.

Download or read book Regime Change written by Arnold Schuchter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regime Change provides in-depth insights into President Bush's handling of national security and terrorism issues pre- and post-9/11 and guidelines for the Democratic presidential candidate's strategic "war on terrorism" that includes: restructuring the Intelligence Community and national security decision-making in the White House; rejuvenating the trans-Atlantic alliance and expanding global collaboration; nation-building in postwar Iraq and Afghanistan; fostering the Israeli-Palestinian peace process; democratization in the Middle East; defusing antagonisms with Muslim nations; nuclear disarmament in Iran and North Korea; dismantling Pakistan's nuclear black market operation; developing economic and security relationships with China in Central Asia; and more. Regime Change gives voters across the political spectrum valuable background for evaluating national security and terrorism positions of both candidates while making a strong case for removal of commander-in-chief Bush along with his White House and Pentagon advisors as a critical step in launching a new multilateral strategy in 2005 for dealing with the root causes and threats of terrorism worldwide. Speeches and papers in Regime Change underscore how Bush's pre- and post-9/11 mindset and predispositions led him to unrealistically use military power to root out "evil" and promote democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of providing multinational leadership in the war on terrorism. The Bush White House overcommitted U.S. military and fiscal resources and underfunded homeland security by selecting the wrong targets in the "war on terrorism" and launching preventive, unilateral wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Anticipating findings by the 9/11 Commission and several independent commissions and Congressional investigations, Regime Change suggests that 9/11 was preventable and exposes similar failures of the U.S. Intelligence Community in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea and Pakistan's international nuclear black market.

Book Lincoln s Sacred Effort

Download or read book Lincoln s Sacred Effort written by Lucas E. Morel and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2000-01-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucas Morel examines what the public life of Abraham Lincoln teaches about the role of religion in a self-governing society. Lincoln's understanding of the requirements of republican government led him to accommodate and direct religious sentiment toward responsible self-government. As a successful republic requires a moral or self-controlled people, Lincoln believed, the moral and religious sensibilities of a society should be nurtured.
