Book The Blessing of the Bikes Other Life Cycles

Download or read book The Blessing of the Bikes Other Life Cycles written by Anthony Labriola and published by Anaphora Literary Press. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blessing of the Bikes & Other LifeCycles is a themed collection in three parts that catalogues and values urban life. It chronicles the way we imagine and reimagine the city. In so doing, the poems become urban praise songs. What would we miss if it were all to go missing? Even if we left the place behind for new cities (or the wilderness), what would always remain dear to us? What would our lives be without the places we have known, including public and private spaces? These poems measure and chart the value of our neighbourhoods and the spirit of the city that we wish to preserve. By meditating on our storied past, the poems in The Bless of the Bikes & Other LifeCycles measure and chart the value of where we live and consider pathways to the city’s future.

We are all star-children, born into the universe, where we must wander from place to place and time to time in search of our own bliss. The trip also takes us to “inner space.” In three parts, Sun Dogs, as a themed collection, attempts to capture moments of wonder, loss and healing: 1. Planetarium, 2. Jealous Planet, and 3. Cosmic Therapies. The poems speak of the human journey – the odyssey of experience in a galaxy filled with legends and natural phenomena. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds and Arrows is a poetry collection centering on the spirituality of desire. As verbal designs, these poems reflect the shape and movement of birds and arrows in flight. Each sequence in counterpoint traces the arc of a journey, a quest with joys and sorrows, a sense of delight, and feelings of grief. The quester is an archer contending with the mystifying forces of life and love. Faced with the bewildering and mysterious aspects of the world, the archer yearns for the visible and the divine. The road leads to an apprehension of a love greater than the one once imagined. The archer yearns for the perfect arrow that will hit the target of understanding. The seeker longs to find the self-surrendering of love as a way forward in the world. The mystic archer is wounded in battle in the face of life's dangers, but still strives for mystical experiences in the real world. The poems in Birds and Arrows aim at such a target in the belief that the quest is real and true. Voices fly past, like arrows and birds in flight, and the reader senses their whirring sound, their call and cry.

Book Slaying the Nuclear Dragon

Download or read book Slaying the Nuclear Dragon written by Tanya Ogilvie-White and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades the debate on nuclear weapons has focused overwhelmingly on proliferation and nonproliferation dynamics. In a series of Wall Street Journal articles, however, George Shultz, William Perry, Henry Kissinger, and Sam Nunn called on governments to rid the world of nuclear weapons, helping to put disarmament back into international security discussions. More recently, U.S. president Barack Obama, prominent U.S. congressional members of both political parties, and a number of influential foreign leaders have espoused the idea of a world free of nuclear weapons. Turning this vision into reality requires an understanding of the forces driving disarmament forward and those holding it back. Slaying the Nuclear Dragon provides in-depth, objective analysis of current nuclear disarmament dynamics. Examining the political, state-level factors that drive and stall progress, contributors highlight the challenges and opportunities faced by proponents of disarmament. These essays show that although conditions are favorable for significant reductions, numerous hurdles still exist. Contributors look at three categories of states: those that generate momentum for disarmament; those with policies that are problematic for disarmament; and those that actively hinder progress--whether openly, secretly, deliberately, or inadvertently. Nuclear deterrence was long credited with preventing war between the two major Cold War powers, but with the spread of nuclear technology, threats have shifted to other state powers and to nonstate groups. Slaying the Nuclear Dragon addresses an urgent need to examine nuclear disarmament in a realistic, nonideological manner.

Book The Painter Angelos and Icon Painting in Venetian Crete

Download or read book The Painter Angelos and Icon Painting in Venetian Crete written by Maria Vassilaki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen studies in this book include six specially translated from Greek and another two published here for the first time. They deal with the art of painting in Crete at a time when the island was under Venetian rule. The main emphasis is on the 15th century and especially on the painter Angelos. More than thirty icons with his signature survive, and at least twenty more can be reliably attributed to him. Angelos was the most significant artist of a particularly significant era. It was at this time that the centre of artistic production migrated from Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire to Candia, the capital of Venetian-occupied Crete. These studies try to reconstruct the personality of this late Byzantine painter, Angelos, not only through his icons but also through his will (1436), now in the State Archives in Venice. In this context they also explore the status of the Cretan painter in society. The large number of extant Cretan icons clearly indicates the striking increase in production from the 15th century onwards. Similarly, archival documents are used to examine the trade of icons in Crete and the way Cretan artists had to organize their workshops in order to meet the requirements of the market.

Book Reflections on Russell

  • ISBN : 1527579395
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Reflections on Russell written by Chad Trainer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contributes some original interpretations on the thought of Bertrand Russell (1872-1970). Instead of dwelling on the purely mathematical logic which tends to be the focus of professional philosophers, it explores Russell’s philosophy, especially his philosophy of science and philosophy of religion. It features some original interpretations of Bertrand Russell’s thoughts and it counters some competing interpretations of his philosophy. Russell could be labeled both a probabilist and empiricist, albeit with critical qualifications. He never left the Pythagorean/Platonic worldview entirely behind. Russell preferred Spinoza over Locke, and believed that many sciences simply beg questions rather than prove philosophic tenets. Although Russell rejected spiritualistic metaphysics, he was able to identify some value in George Berkeley’s philosophy. This book shows that Russell developed a philosophy incorporating atheism and spirituality.
